Rays sign Balfour

So you are telling me that Garza/Balfour both could have been had and still stayed under the cap?  WTF!  i find that irritating as hades.

Uhh, no?

Balfour and Garza would have combined for 19 million AAV.

The Angels seemed to have AT MOST 15 million of space before they hit the luxury tax. Could even be less than that depending on what incentives in his contract Ibanez hits this year.

that depends on who you believe but still.. im pretty sure they could have figured out how to float a few mil to make it fit somehow.  maybe not i dont know but the proximity is pretty close

Balfour slumped after the ASB.   4.00+ ERA and nearly 1.50 WHIP

Permanent decline starting, being age 36?

For once, we aren't making panic acquisitions/signing age 30+ players to big deals, although the results of Bourjos/Grichuk for Freese won't be known for a little while.  Maybe, just maybe, an actual plan is finally being put into place.

If so, standing ovation!

Or it could be that arte is truly on a tight budget, which means the terrible moves of the past few years has f**ed over the team for a while.

The good thing about Arte is even if what you are suggesting is true, he will change his mind. Also for awhile might be one off season, considering how much payroll comes off the books next season, which is probably about $30 million, maybe more.

So we should get a guy who just failed a physical?

Don't worry about the failed physical. At least he has all his limbs. The Angels could sign a one legged blind man and it would be an upgrade to the bullpen.
