Tanaka to be posted soon by Rakuten

That makes no sense with pitchers and catchers reporting around the second week of February.

Japanese club could care less about the MLB schedule. Their is no guarantee that the player will sign with a MLB club

  • All "postings" of NPB players must be made between November 1 and February 1.
  • Beginning the day after the player is posted, and concluding 30 days later, any Major League Club willing to pay the release fee set by the NPB Club may then negotiate with the player in an attempt to reach agreement on a contract.

Anaheim has lots to entice him with. He'll be playing next to living legends in Trout and Pujols, great location, diverse culture, and maybe the Halos can get Matsui to vouch for them lol. I think I remember him really enjoying it here.

As long as he doesn't set foot in the AYCE Sushi Biyako on St College.  We got a chance to sign him.

Seattle is the dark horse here.  They have money to spend.  They just made a splash with Cano.  A King, Tanaka, Iwakuma starting 3 would be pretty good.

And if it goes by the old posting rules.  Once he's posted, and the team accepts the max bid, teams will have 30 days to work out a deal.  Which tells me Garza will be signed way before Tanaka is.

From Rotowold

According to Sanspo.com, Rakuten Golden Eagles owner Hiroshi Mikitani will allow Masahiro Tanaka to be posted this offseason.

The news, though not official, was passed along by Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. There have been some doubts about whether Tanaka would be posted this winter, with one recent report suggesting that the Rakuten Golden Eagles were planning to convince him to stick around for another year, but they will apparently grant him his wish and let him come to MLB. The new posting system has a maximum bid of $20 million, so we'd be surprised if the number of teams involved in negotiations doesn't go over double-digits. The Yankees, Cubs, Angels, Dodgers and Diamondbacks are among the teams expected to be in the mix

Tanaka and Iwakuma were also teammates before Iwakuma came stateside. For whatever that's worth.

It's likely he gets posted well before February 1st. Then again as you said Rakuten has no reason to post him any sooner.

Since they didn't want to post him for only $20 mil in the first place, they could conceivably wait until February 1 just to F the MLB teams that want him.

Going with a sleeper team here.. I think Houston goes all out for him.

I'm thinking same state, different team.  Rangers have Darvish, they might want to pair him with Tanaka.   Playing alongside another Japanese ace might appeal to Tanaka.  Then if they really wanted to just for shits and giggles, they could turn around and trade off a Martin Perez and prospects for David Price and dominate the division with pitching..   Their GM seems to value run prevention, and that team has more than enough offense to win with a pitching staff like that.
