Astros In Serious Discussions With Mike Morse

By Zach Links [December 11 at 7:04pm CST]

The Astros are in serious discussions with Michael Morse, sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Earlier today we learned that Astros skipper Bo Porter is pushing for Morse in Houston.

Morse, who hit just hit .215/.270/.381 last year, reportedly wants a $7MM or $8MM on a one-year deal. In Morse's defense, he battled significant injuries in 2013 en route to that career-worst slash line. He's quite familiar with Porter, who was the Nationals' third base coach from 2010-12 when Morse posted a strong .296/.345/.516 batting line with 64 homers in 1298 plate appearances.

When guy is healthy he can rake! And his value is high in being able to play outfield and first! I would give him a 1 year! Maybe 2.

Mike Morse will be 32 this year.  He debuted at 23, and in his entire career has managed more than 102 games played all of ONCE.   He's managed more than 100 games all of twice in his entire career.  He makes injury prone guys look like Lou Gehrig.  His inability to stay healthy is bad, but when you consider this guy got popped for PEDs and has served a suspension, you have to wonder if the two things aren't connected.

On the way home from work last night I heard the manager of the Astros on MLB network.  Seems like they have a decent plan.  He said they sacrificed last season to see what they have with the team, who will stick and who can be let go/traded.  Now they're gonna focus on winning.  Interesting conversation.

So they're gonna focus on winning 70 games?

Baby steps.
