I'm seeing a lot of people here suggest that Santiago will hold down the No. 5 spot while Skaggs starts in AAA if the Angels sign/acquire another starting pitcher.

I have heard nothing that indicates Dipoto sees Skaggs as anything but a definitive part of his 2014 rotation. If anything, Skaggs is in and Santiago is the potential swing man.

Santiago may not be ready for 200 innings yet.

Last season's 149 innings (all spent at the MLB level) was a career high for him.

He's in a similar boat with Richards and Skaggs, both of whom have never exceeded 157 innings in a season across any level.

The first 3-4 months of 2014 should be fine for all 3.   But by August, it would be nice to have a good backup in place (Shoemaker?).

Up to this point, Santiago has been a better Major League pitcher. Skaggs was the better prospect and has a much higher upside. I think they'll both be in the rotation, however, if we get one more good starter, I can see Skaggs and Richards fighting for the 5th spot.

Anything that pushes Blanton down the depth chart is a plus.

From reading around, sounds like Santiago was kind of groomed last year into a starting role and is also where he excelled. Most write ups have any drop off of his numbers from the pen.

He can take on a full load.

I have no problem going into the season with Weaver, Wilson, Santiago, Richards and Skaggs.

Angels have the luxury now of that being the worst case scenario.  Hopefully they add at least 1 more SP and out of Richards/Skaggs/Santiago, the one they deem least ready will start the season in AAA and be the 6th starter.

I have no problem going into the season with Weaver, Wilson, Santiago, Richards and Skaggs. That said, if we signed Garza or a talent like his for the #3 spot, it creates depth and gives the Angels a change to use Santiago as our closer ahead of Frieri.

From what I've been reading, Dipoto seems to be saying that Frieri is going to stay the closer. I'm not happy with this, but this seems to be the direction. I'm not sure if he's saying this because he doesn't want to spend any more money on relief.

I'm hoping for 180+ innings from Skaggs and Santiago but that's probably not going to happen.
