Angels sign LHRP Clay Rapada to a minor league deal

Why a minor league deal? Seems like with numbers like that (against lefties) he should be the situational lefty. Burnett's splits are closer to even than that.

With a minor league deal he doesn't have to have a place on the 40 man roster just yet.

The Angels have pretty ridiculous lefty depth right now.  Hate Dipoto all you want but he does have one understandable affinity, LHP.  He is after all the man that took Joe Saunders, Pat Corbin and Tyler Skaggs away from the Angels. 

 

Right now, the Angels LHP depth includes Burnett, Boshers, Maronde, Sisk, Taylor and Rapada.  Through quantity (cheap one at that), Dipoto intends to glean some quality.  You gotta figure that out of those six guys (Did we lose Taylor yet?  Maybe five) at least one or two will be useful in a Major League bullpen.  

 

If Burnett's healthy he won't be a LOOGY, he'll be a setup man, which leaves the job wide open between Boshers, Maronde, Sisk and Rapada.  Boshers' numbers never matched his stuff and that trend is likely to continue, Maronde took a tremendous step back last year so he's iffy for 2014.  Sisk has been nothing short of amazing in the minor leagues but is coming off surgery and isn't terribly projectable.  That leaves Rapada.

 

We'll see how it shakes out.  Beginning of the year I think Rapada's in the big league pen.  Midway through the year once he shakes off the rust, Sisk seizes the position.  By the end of the year Maronde might finally be reaching his potential and will be lights out as a LOOGY.

Taylor is still on the Angels rehabbing from Tommy John. He is throwing from 60 feet everyday. He also put on some weight. He's going to miss Spring in terms of the full workouts but he should be back for good by late April.

I hope JD can sign a few additional guys like this to improve what is available to call upon from AAA.  Would be great to get a couple guys similar to Volstad for additional depth.
