Astros acquire Dexter Fowler

The Rockies announced that they have traded outfielder Dexter Fowler and a player to be named later to the Astros in exchange for right-hander Jordan Lyles and outfielder Brandon Barnes.

This whole trade is a bit of a head scratcher to me as well.

 

Fowler has two years of control left and is heading to a team that realistically isn't going to contend in 2014 and possible 2015. For the Rockies it frees up $7.3MM in cash but puts their CF position at the mercy of a young prospect in a season that they seem very willing and ready to contend in? Have to look into it more but at first glance it is a bit weird especially for the Astros.

Weird for both teams. Rockies are still trying to contend next year I believe.

I guess the Astros think they can end up flipping Fowler for more than they just gave up.
