Fletcher: Trumbo not enough to get good starting pitcher

Recommended Posts

I am guessing here that if we were to give up both Peter and Trumbo and we received a pitcher, we still wouldn't be happy. You still aren't going to see us get a stud pitcher for those two, so we would be using two of our trade chips to get a fringe number 2 pitcher, probably a number 3, then we would need a 3rd baseman, and an outfield/1b/dh. The best bet is still to sign Garza and or Tanaka and move Aybar or Kendrick for studs that are a year or two away.

If it were not for the two months each year when Trumbo's bat disappears, we could have any pitcher we wanted for him.

Without those mega-slumps, you're talking about a 45-home run, 130 RBI type hitter.

edit: changed the numbers a bit to reflect his potential.

I like Howie, Aybar and Trumbo, but if it were up to me I would trade Aybar, then Trumbo and then Howie. I don't necessarily think that Romine is better than Green, but I would rather have the defensive player that Romine can be over what Green brings with the bat. I also think that Howie could play a little outfield if we get thin there, so it wouldn't hurt too much to move Trumbo, plus I just like Howie better as a player than Trumbo. If we were drafting better this would all be a non issue.

BTW I actually don't see this as much of an issue. I figured Kendrick would get traded over Trumbo and Aybar, and I think he would easily bring in a number 4 guy. They just have to be all in on Tanaka and Garza.

I'll ask the same question I asked people before: do you really think we're going to be all-in on Tanaka and/or Garza?  Signing both will likely add a minimum of $30 million a year to the payroll.   Even trading Kendrick for a lower-salaried player obviously wouldn't offset what it would take to get Tanaka and Garza.

I would think that Trumbo ought to be able to bring back a guy like Skaggs (who has actually struggled quite a bit at the major league level).  Obviously a guy like Skaggs is not established and comes with a fair degree of risk (he could be a total bust), but it would seem to me that a Trumbo/Skaggs trade would be fair.

I'm actually at the point where I think Kendrick or Aybar should be traded for mere pitching prospects. Take that extra salary on top of the $ freed up in non-tenders and go get two starting pitchers whatever caliber. With another $30M coming off the books next year, we should be in ok shape.

I didn't mean they should get BOTH.
