Daniel Hudson non-tendered

Second Base

There's a ton of talent available out there, specifically relief pitching talent.  We can all speculate which players Dipoto should pick up, but this one actually makes a ton of sense.  Angels need pitching depth, Hudson wouldn't cost much at all, he's one of Dipoto's former prospects/players that he brought in during his tenure as Arizona's AGM.  Does anyone else see Dipoto making this move and actually really supporting it?

Diamondbacks To Non-Tender Daniel Hudson

By Jeff Todd [December 2 at 10:22pm CST]

The Diamondbacks will non-tender starter Daniel Hudsontweets Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca. Though the sides had attempted to work out a deal to keep Hudson in Arizona, he will hit the open market.

Hudson surely would not have been a non-tender candidate were it not for his injury struggles. The righty is working back from his second Tommy John surgery at 26 years of age, but was projected to earn a $1.1MM salary through arbitration due to his strong early-career performance. Though he had an ugly 7.35 ERA in 2012, that came over just nine starts; in the prior year, his only full season of MLB work, he posted a 3.49 ERA in 222 innings.

As Nicholson-Smith notes, however, there is still reason to believe that the sides can come together. Indeed, both Hudson and the Diamondbacks have indicated a strong interest in a reunion, though he figures to garner some interest from clubs who would like to take a chance on his upside.

I think he had the second surgery in June, which if that's the case he should be back around the all-star break.  If the angels landed him and he successfully made it all the way back, that'd be the shot in the arm this organization needs in terms of pitching.  Young, controllable with upside.

If he could be acquired relatively cheaply I'd be quite satisfied with our new DH candidate. :P

Seriously though if he were to recover Scotty is right he would be a shot in the arm for the Angels as a mid or back-end rotation guy.

He won't be ready to mid season but this is a type of move the Angels should definitely consider.

Clearly, there's a huge risk here for a guy coming off TJ surgery for the 2nd time. He's still only going to be entering his age 27 season next year. If he were to come back and regain 75% of his 2011 form, you'd be looking at a humongous bargain. A 3.28 FIP across 222 innings? Dude was a stud that year.

If you can sign him for cheap and use him mid season, then great.

I don't know much about him but looking at the numbers I think he is a good risk to take. He is younger than Madson and if he is picked up, even if you have to pay him a bit more than you would like, and he is our fall back option in the middle of the season, that would be great.

Swipe him away. 1 year 2 million guaranteed and a team option for next year when he's fully healthy at 5 million.  If he recovers you get half season of a solid SP for 2 million, and a cheap #3/4 SP in 2015 for 5 million.  If he can't recover, you're out 2 million, which is seat-cushion change for an organization like this.
