It is a territorial dispute between China and Japan regarding air space that encroaches on Japanese islands. The US is commited to insuring Japanese territorial rights that were established in the WWII peace treaty are upheld.

So why can't Japan fly their planes over and act like a tough guy? If China was smart (which they are) they know not to mess with Japan since we are standing behind them with our fists clenched.

I think the U.S. is correct here, for a change.  You can't arbitrarily set up an air defense zone over disputed territories and expect everything to be dandy.

When the U.S. wrote the Japanese constitution it was written that they cannot have offensive capabilities and cannot spend more than 1% GDP on defense so we really don't have a choice but to help them defend themselves. Not to mention that we don't need China thinking they can start bullying all of Asia.

You're right. At least half of their population lives in crushing poverty. There is a growing middle class, but the incomes are not close to Americans'. With all of our problems here, our people still have money to burn on Chinese goods.

Yes that's true. But if the Chinese were to sell US bonds, the purchasing power of the dollar would quickly drop against the Chinese yuan. This would allow the Chinese to buy their own products much more easily.
