Jepsen will be tendered

I'm not a Jepsen fan, but I suppose it beats giving someone else more money when this team still needs two starting pitchers.

I guess they're enamored with his plus fastball. Dude has shitty command and is either great or shit out there.

But the problem is you should be able to find below league-average (by ERA+) relievers on the scrap heap for basically the league minimum, not paying them Jepsen's projected 1.4 million (or more).

It really wouldn't surprise me if they have trade interest in Jepsen and he gets moved in the near future. Otherwise it's more of "Jepsey looked real crisp tonight but his command got away from him after the first home run he gave up...." - Scioscia

I actually have no problem with this move.  It is a one-year commitment, at a reasonable rate, for a guy who is a league average bullpen arm.  And best case scenario, he can be a valuable contributor (see 2012 season).  I'd rather have a guy who we know will be average than a guy like J.C. Gutierrez or Roberto Coello.  Jeppy has solid k/9 and HR/9 rates - he isn't bad as your fourth or fifth guy out of the pen (behind Smith, Frieri, Burnett, and DDLR).

I'm a little more surprised by DiPoto's comment (that he's surprised people expect Jep to be non-tendered) than I am of the move. I like Jepson in the bullpen over whatever garbage we would replace him with, but I'm not sure the money makes any sense. I'd have non-tendered him and put the money toward a better FA reliever, or brought Jep back at a lower rate.
