That car was so mangled, I don't see how anyone could've survived the initial impact.  Not only was it split in 2 pieces, I think they also said while the front half landed on it's wheels, the back half was actually upside down.

Silver lining is both passengers died at impact before the car caught on fire. Makes you want to think twice when your buddy decides to drive at crazy speeds.

i read that his lungs showed signs of breathing in a bunch of smoke.

ie he took some big huge breaths after the fire started.

Apparently there wasn't enough smoke material. He could have been knocked out barely breathing at initial impact. His last few breathes may have happened to be when the car filled with smoke.
