"Championship caliber teams must be 8 or 9 deep in SP"

that's something Mike Scioscia has said repeatedly over the years, and I tend to agree. There's all this talk right now of adding 2 more SP, one via trade, one via FA. What am I missing? We have 3 viable SP right now - Weaver, Wilson, and Richards. And that's counting on a rookie who has never been in a rotation for a complete season. I don't think Blanton, Hanson, or Williams qualify personally, and if they're supposed to, well I think we're in trouble.

We'll see what Dipoto does, but if indeed he only adds 2 more SP, certainly feels to me like we're repeating the exact same mistake of last year.

I just learned something about Escobar that I didn't know previously. Thanks for that.

As for 8-9 deep, the Angels are looking great:

Weaver

Wilson

Richards

Blanton

Williams

Hanson

Shoemaker

Maronde

Schugel

We're in good shape.

AJ must have been doing 3-5 at the time.  Someone provide a link to the proper thread?  I can't seem to locate it.

Hey, we're 8 or 9 deep.

Weaver

Wilson

RIchards

Williams

Blanton

Hanson

Volstad

Leblanc

Enright

Or in other words: Weaver, Wilson, Richards, UNENDING PIT OF DESPAIR

you forgot Shoemaker.  I know it's kinda scary and no offense to him because I am really hoping he make the team as the swing, but he's probably the 4th best starting pitcher on the 40man.

That's why people are so pissed about the trade of Bourjos.

He was supposed to be packaged for a number 2 or 3 pitcher.

There wasn't a deal to be had where Bourjos could be packaged for a starting pitcher. Dipoto worked the phones! That's why he was sent for a 3B. A position the Angels wanted to upgrade this offseason.

I feel as if people really don't get that. They think Dipoto just called one dude and took whatever was offered. We had an excess of outfielders. We had no position to control negotiations

Well except for the fact that nothing was forcing them to trade Bourjos.

they weren't forced to do anything.  the fundamental problem is that you don't agree with the value they got in return (and nor do I frankly) but they did likely turn bench value into field value for 2014.  That's their goal. We have to live with that.

Must? Really? So if it's an imperative is it 8 or 9? Let's not get wishy washy with our mandates. And how are we defining SP? Is there a AQL?

are you being argumentative for the sake of it, or do you really not understand?

the point is a team has to have SP depth beyond the starting 5.  Guys they can count on for quality starts when one of the starters goes down (which is inevitable).  The Angels didn't have that depth last season and it bit them in the ass, and from where I'm standing, they're not close to having that depth now.
