I'm not entirely sure this is incompetence on Dipoto's part. Dipoto's goal is to keep his job. He needs to win this season. What does Grichuk matter to him? What does a little older and a little more expensive mean to him? What does depth or a farm system mean to him? 

 

The Cardinals can make trades like this because their GM is secure in his job and can play a long game. I think the long game for the Angels would be in their ultimate best interests and total rebuild needs to happen. Very few of the fans will tolerate that and I'm sure Arte won't. But as long as he keeps putting on the "We must compete and win every year" we are going to be making moves like these to patch wholes instead of tearing down and rebuilding it right.
