Angels discussing trade for Freese

Ken Rosenthal verified

Sources: #STLCards, #Angels have discussed a trade that would send 3B David Freese to Anaheim.

Doesn't fix the pitching but definitely a trade I could get behind... as long as we aren't giving away everything.

This makes sense if Lynn or Kelly is involved. Maybe Aybar and Bourjos for Lynn/Kelly and Freese? I'd be happy with that. I'd be happier with Freese and Miller but that isn't happening unless the Angels give up all their trade pieces and prospects in one deal.

Freese is pretty much the definition of average, which would probably make him an improvement over Nelson/Jimenez and free up a Kendrick trade so that Green can play 2B, but doesn't excite me in any way.

2012 was awesome. Nearly 4 WAR. Maybe Jerry sees that Freese can rebound to that kind of production. Good buy low option.

If we get him for cheap, I'm good with it.

Then there's this, from a Cardinals fan....

Freese parties waaaay too hard and doesn't focus on baseball. His 2011 WS heroics made him a god in STL and he let it all go to his head. I even have have a friend that knows his dealer. Freese is done as a useful baseball player. Which he barely was in 2011. Soon he'll be on the radio with his buddy Chris Duncan. Another has been/never was.

Perhaps reuniting with Pujols will set him straight if the above is true. I do like his 2012 enough to give up a moveable piece to land him. Just not a Bourjos or Trumbo unless we're getting an arm in return as well.

The Cardinals already have two 1B better than Trumbo, I can't see a match there at all.

If it's just Freese coming from STL, I don't imagine it would cost a whole lot. I think their plan is to move Matt Carp back to 3rd and give prospect Wong the 2nd base gig. Freese will be eligible for arb again this year and should fetch between $4-4.5M, and that's too pricey for a guy you don't see as a starter.

If the trade get's bigger, than you could possibly see an Aybar and Bourjos for Freese + Lynn or Kelly. I have never seen the potential for the Angels to get one of the elite young arm like Miller, Martinez, or Wacha.
