Bronson Arroyo In Talks With Twins

By Charlie Wilmoth [November 12 at 11:06pm CST]

The Twins are in the market for a starting pitcher, and they're furthest along with Bronson Arroyo, Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press writes. The Twins are inspecting Arroyo's medical records and have discussed some contract language with Arroyo's agency, Gaylord Sports Management. Berardino earlier tweeted that the two sides have not yet begun discussing terms of the contract, but noted that the work the Twins have already done indicates that they are "serious."

Arroyo has pitched at least 199 innings in each of the last nine seasons, so the Twins would look to him to eat innings in what was baseball's worst rotation in 2013. He posted a 3.79 ERA with 5.5 K/9 and 1.5 BB/9 with the Reds last season. MLBTR's Tim Dierkes predicted he would receive a two-year, $24MM deal.

Diamondbacks Interested In Nate Schierholtz

By Tim Dierkes [November 12 at 11:41pm CST]

The Diamondbacks have interest in trading for Cubs outfielder Nate Schierholtz, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.  Schierholtz, 30 in February, smacked 21 home runs in 503 plate appearances for the Cubs this year.  In an article Sunday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic speculated on Schierholtz as a possible fit for the Diamondbacks, who were rumored to have an eye on Cubs righty Jeff Samardzija prior to the trade deadline.

With more than five years of big league service time, Schierholtz is arbitration eligible and under the Cubs' control for one more season.  Matt Swartz has projected a $3.8MM salary for 2014, a $1.55MM raise on Schierholtz's 2013 base salary.  The Cubs inked Schierholtz to a one-year deal in December of last year after he was non-tendered by the Phillies.  They were able to offer him the most playing time of his career while making sure he faced left-handed pitching only 13% of the time.  He responded with a .251/.301/.470 line as the Cubs' primary right fielder.

D'Backs GM Kevin Towers has talked about his desire to add a power-hitting corner outfielder.  Gerardo Parra seems to have one of the team's outfield spots locked down, with Adam EatonA.J. Pollock, and Cody Ross also in the mix.  Given Arizona's limited payroll flexibility, Schierholtz could hold extra appeal at less than $4MM.

Athletics To Sign Nick Punto

By Zach Links [November 13 at 1:17pm CST]

The A's announced that they have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with an option on 2015 with infielder Nick Punto.  Punto's deal is for $2.75MM in 2014 with a vesting option for the same amount in 2015, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter).  The vesting option is based on days spent on the disabled list and comes with a $250K buyout if it's not exercised.

Reagins played a big role in the draft and was personally responsible for firing Eddie Bane, though I'll give him a pass on that one because he hired Ric Wilson who happens to be quite good, albeit ultra conservative.

I actually found it quite funny that the Dan Haren trade was the brain child of Jerry Dipoto.  He kept speaking with Cashman and Oppenheimer of the Yanks when they wanted Haren and the Yanks kept trying to offer Mentero and Delin Betances.  Dipoto was holding out for more and was told by the Yanks to feel free to shop around and see if he can get a better deal.

Dipoto brought up the idea of Skaggs, Corbin, Rodriguez and Saunders for Haren.  All Reagins did was counter with no Corbin.  Dipoto told him he'd take the Yanks offer without it (he was never seriously interested in the Yankees offer) and Reagins accepted.  That should give you a glimpse into the man's negotiation skills.

Wow. I cringed reading that.

If no agreement is reached.  Doesn't that mean the posting process stays as is?  In which case, I think he will very much be posted.

This was just posted on MLBTR.

MLB Amending Posting System Proposal; Agreement May Not Be Reached
By Steve Adams [November 14 at 12:07pm CST]

Major League Baseball COO Rob Manfred spoke to reporters today, including Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger, and said that MLB plans to amend its proposal for changes to the posting system after Nippon Professional Baseball took too long to inform MLB of a decision (Twitter link).

Manfred's comments come shortly after NPB Union executive director Toru Matsubara told the Japan Times that NPB has approved the proposed changes to the system in what was an "agonizing decision." Said Matsubara: "There was not enough time on our side and we haven’t got any more bargaining power than this. It was an agonizing decision (accepting the revisions)." However, as Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times points out (on Twitter), the lengthy delays might make NPB's decision a moot point.

Meanwhile, one owner told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that there are "serious reservations" regarding the posting system, and an agreement may not be reached at all. Should that be the case, coveted ace Masahiro Tanaka wouldn't be available to Major League teams this offseason at all (Twitter link). Newsday's David Lennon agrees (on Twitter), noting that MLB's new hard-line stance could pose a threat to Tanaka's ability to jump to the Majors.

According to the Japan Times report, the system that Matsubara reluctantly agreed to would have awarded the top bidding team exclusive negotiation rights with the posted player. However, the posting fee would have been reduced to an average of the top two bids, and MLB teams that weren't able to work out a deal with the posted player would be subject to a fine.

Interesting.  So the top bid will still win, but the bid itself would be an average of the top 2.  With pretty much a deposit attached.

I still don't understand why all this blind post stuff.  Just stick it on Ebay and let everyone watch as the teams bid each other up.

What about Aybar, Trumbo, Nelson and prospect for Craig, Freese and Miller. Something along those lines. I'm sure you guys can think of a better package just spit balling here.

Mozeliak would be fired for that, even if it was only Craig and Miller involved.

Craig was as good as anyone in MLB with RISP.

Miller is a #2 starter waiting to happen.

Would the Cards like Trumbo even though they would have Craig and Adams? Just trying to figure out a good package for Miller.

no, and we don't have one (unless it involves trout).

The ONLY way we 'could' get miller would be if multiple teams are involved. As in, some team with something the cards wants really wants trumbo (or one of our other guys). But an even swap us and them, no chance.

Its a combo of the cards being in a great position (tons of depth, few holes) and us having very few pieces to trade.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: #Rangers, #Dodgers discussed trades at GM meetings - Rangers have extra IFer, Dodgers extra OFer. Talks failed to progress.

@Ken_Rosenthal: #Rangers inquired on Kemp, but had concerns about his health, remaining 6 yrs/$128M. #Dodgers like Andrus. But again, no traction.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Expect #Rangers to be linked to virtually every power bat in free agency and trades. That would include Napoli, Beltran, McCann, others.

I think Aybar as a main piece could get talks going.
