And the award for Angels Defensive player of the year goes to...

Richard

This is hilarious. I would have picked Shuck or #5 as the worst defensive player for the Angels this year.

Kendrick or Trout were our two best defensive players.

Wait a minute, aren't you the guy that keeps pounding on the table with his shoe how important advanced metrics are for judging players and then say Trout with a -0.9 dWAR was better defensively than Shuck who posted a -0.6 dWAR. Of the three outfielders that logged the most innings the ranking by dWAR is Shuck, Trout, Hamilton.

Kendrick and Aybar were the same in terms of dWAR with a shockingly poor 0.1 dWAR. For middle infielders on a team that supposedly stresses defense that is abysmal. Of the regular infielders it is a tie for worst with Trumbo and Callaspo at -0.8.

By far, though, the Angels best defender was Peter Bourjos but his playing time was cut short due to injury.

"Advanced" stats that require math skills folks learned after the 2nd grade are very important.

I have never said scouting observations are not important -- they are crucial.

There are other defensive metrics than what baseball-reference uses.

Off the top of my head... Harris, Iannetta, Trumbo, Nelson were worse?

Add Calhoun

Congrats Shuck!

Trout was better than his defensive stats indicated, IMO. The first poor month defensively didn't help but he still got to tons of baseballs that very few guys could get to.

Shuck was downright terrible the first part of the season. He got better but those few defensive gems definitely helped his case out here. He had a surprisingly good arm too.

according to dWAR, the Angels best defensive player this season was Hank Conger  :o

Which helped to keep his fielding percentage high enough for him to win this prestigious award. It was all part of a very clever strategy.

Shuck is the guy who was pulled several times late in the game, for defensive purposes with Colin Cowgil replacing him.

I don't think it's something the organization gives out.

Wilson began the awards last season and said through a press release that winners "are determined by using a formula that balances scouting information, sabermetric analysis and basic fielding statistics."
