Why do they keep picking these old guys who are going to die soon or want to retire soon?

I wondered this too.  Why draft a 76 year old?    Bring in a guy who is in his 50s that can go for 30 years like PJP2.

There are some who speculate that they chose two consecutive short-timers because of the length of PJP's papacy. The Church wants a "reformer", or more to the point, someone who looks like a reformer, but they don't want a long-term resident who's decisions will not be questioned for years to come. If Francis steps out of line too much, well, they can wait for him to die. They also need someone who can address the Church with regard to much of their current issues with child ****ing and not be around too long so it looks like things are being addressed while business as usual in the child ****ing department continues on.

Remember, the Pope is not chosen by God, he is chosen by men.
