• The Angels aren't likely to extend a qualifying offer to free agent Jason Vargas, but they might sign him to a multiyear deal anyway, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. Vargas would likely decline the Angels' qualifying offer, DiGiovanna says, but the Angels don't want to offer one because the $14.1MM commitment if Vargas were to accept would move them close to the $189MM luxury tax threshold.

Good news for the Angels.  There is no such thing as a luxury tax, so going over that shouldn't be a problem.

 

Bad news for the Angels.  There is such thing as a competitive balance tax, and if the Angels won't go over that, it's going to be a long 2014.

I don't agree that Vargas wouldn't accept the qualifying offer. Frankly, I think he would. There is simply no way he would make that much on a multi-year deal right now, but agreeing to it allows him to make a lot of money while pitching for a long term contract in 2015.

 

I'd be ok with 2/20. MAYBE 3/27.

1/14 is a good deal if you're Vargas but he might want the guaranteed money over a 2-3 year deal instead.
