Jury Duty

Recommended Posts

I received one last week that said because I had ignored their other requests that if I didn't show up there would be a warrant issued. I live in the mountains and our mailbox is on a street corner 2 blocks from my house. I don't have anything that is important sent there. I agree that if they don't send them registered they have to prove that you received it. I believe that the info is garnered from the DMV.

So they're releasing people early and reconfiguring a lot of jails to support the prison population (which isn't going away any tine soon since prison is a multibillion dollar industry) but they are going to make sure people that don't go to jury duty have a place? The state can never prove you got a non-certified piece of mail.

Just ribbing you B, but if ever a summons comes in for Grand Jury do not treat it like a lower court. Those guys have no sense of humor and I witnessed two bench warrants issued for those that didn't respond.

The judge even issued a warrant to a person on our jury that didn't show up after the 16th day of service and the only reason he wasn't arrested and dragged in front of the judge was because he was hospitalized from a car accident. The sheriffs visited him in intensive care to verify he was not capable of serving.

When I was on an lds church mission I was summoned to Sacramento for the big show. I had to fill out an absentee. While I was out of state at college I was summoned every year and replied that i was out of state. Upon graduating from college I became a resident of Utah and for the last 11 years I have not been summoned once.

Actually, saw that happen in the lower courts also.  A chick decided she didn't want to show up for the second day.  So the judge issued a bench warrant.  Doesn't help when she says to a bunch of people I'm not showing up.

One time I got called and was sent to the Compton courthouse, where on my lunch break on the patio (big mistake to go outside for lunch), two gang members almost got into it nearby. Shouting, flashing signs at each other, the whole show. For some reason there were no sheriff's deputies to be seen, when a few moments earlier there had been several walking around.

Another occasion, two weeks after I served at the Long Beach courthouse, a summons came for Federal grand jury in L.A. Six months, one day a week.

I got out of that, of course. Since then, no summons for the past four years.

I can't imagine anyone serving on a grand jury unless they're retired or long-term unemployed.

Most long term grand juries are retired people that volunteer. I was summoned for a 30 day grand jury and it was guaranteed it would be only 30 days. There were over 110 people summoned for that session, of those half were released on a blind draw.

The next was a random number selection of potential jurors and of those left I was called 5th. No excuse other than being a member of the court, law enforcement or active military duty was approved. I ended up then being picked as the jury foreman by the Grand jury Advisor.

I can't imagine anyone serving on a grand jury unless they're retired or long-term unemployed.

Does anyone know how we get on the jury duty lists to being with?

Last I heard it was when you register to vote.

If I knew then what I know now I would have gladly refused to register to vote in order to never have to do jury duty again.

We gladly thank you for your patriotism.

Signed,

Revolutionary War minutemen
