Angels Official Website: Angels claim lefty reliever Carson from Mets

Recommended Posts

Putting him on the 40 man is stupid, with THOSE minor league career stats.

What has he done in the minors, that Jeremy Berg didn't do?

Again, what does Berg have to do to get his MLB chance?

AO,

It really wouldn't surprise me if the FO decides at some point in time between now and the start of the 2014 season to try and sneak Carson down as depth. There is nothing wrong with this strategy and frankly he could be a Scott Downs type of LOOGY specialist based on his 2012-2013 Minor League splits. He is only 23. Be patient my friend.

And how do you propose you find another De La Rosa without playing anyone?

Props also on your ability to simply sign good players.

So your argument is that it's okay to sacrifice games while trying out players in the hope that one out of the entire bunch turns out any good? Was putting Rasmus, Stange, Gutierrez, etc, into close-game situations a good idea? I'm not saying that guys with 2.20 ERA's are sitting out there waiting to be signed for pennies, I'm saying that signing utter scrubs with awful all-around stats like this guy that have maybe a %5 chance of turning it around  is a bad way to put together a bullpen. It's like building an investment portfolio made up entirely of distressed assets. Sure, one will miraculously make a turnaround, but the portfolio as a whole will still suck.

not a good analogy because you have valuable assets and stocks available right away.

but yes, when it's September and the team is out of it I want to see what this team has going next year.

you also have a higher value for players in general that isn't there. finding talent or players even staying up is probably the hardest of any sport. just look at the last 10 drafts and first rounds and see how many failures there are. teams are lucky to get 2-3 players that workout from a very long draft process. so that 5% or any other minimal chance you'd give is accurate for every team, not just the Angels and them being incompetent as you'd like to view them.

I'd say that the patience on bringing Berg up wore thin.

Can someone explain to me how someone can have solid minor league numbers like Berg, but never get a MLB chance?

Two years he's been in AAA, what's the hold up?    Were Stange and Rasmus, et al truly better options?   At least Berg can pound the strike zone, a foreign idea to Stange, Rasmus, et al.

And isn't the analogy of "You don't know what you have until trying it." applicable to Berg as well?

Wow, a lot of overreaction here.

It's not like we have a lot of prospects that need to be added to the 40 man to protect from the Rule 5 draft.

Dude might be dropped if we sign somebody in a few months.

This was my exact thought as I was reading most of these comments

LOL @ people getting angry over this, it's irrelevant to the teams bullpen unless he starts to produce in AAA and we lose some guys to injuries. Maybe he tosses 10 scoreless innings in Spring Training too and he becomes apart of the BP. Either way, it's depth that we desperately need.

Stange and Rasmus were supposed to be "depth" too. Just becomes someone is a warm body doesn't mean they help your depth. This guy is most likely awful. I'm not freaking out about this...I just want to see real additions to the pen with value at some point

I wish there was a way to go on PiratesWin.com, TwinsWin.com and all the other MLB organizations fan sites to watch their reaction to their team signing insignificant players.  I'm sure every team picks reclamation projects from other orgs scrap heaps for one reason or another (feel THEIR staff can fix something, scouted him hard for the original draft, some former relationship, etc.).  I am of the opinion that no minor league with any future is being sacrificed to make moves like these.  Relax.  Assume that nothing will come of it, but it doesn't mean teams should stop trying.  If it never worked, teams wouldn't do this practice.

Unfortunately, this is how you build a bullpen. I will joke about bags of diarrhea and throwing shit at the wall but that's pretty much exactly what needs to be done to build a quality bullpen these days. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to spend so much money on guys who will generally be inconsistent and pitch 50-60 innings a year. This doesn't typically work out for most teams and certainly hasn't worked out for the Angels.

I'm not saying they should ignore the FA market for relievers this year, I actually believe they should sign at least one relief pitcher. You just can't bring in all these big "names" and expect to have a successful pen. You have to find guys like De La Rosa. It sucks, because most of the guys you bring in will be awful, but the same goes for signing contracts. It's just with guys like Carson, you aren't paying a lot of money.

Completely on point.

his name was robert carson. his name was robert carson.

in other relevant news, Arte Moreno's wife bought some new china for their beach house.

Or, she bought the china beach dvd box set?

Agreed with what most are saying. This isn't 'news'. The upside is that he can help the team in some way, be it improving and be able to contribute in the majors, the downside being he gets released and we lose minimal money. Not really a big deal.
