Remember when Gutierrez, Stange, Rasmus, etc, were rejects? Oh wait, they still are. For every De la Rosa, there are 5 guys who cost you games while you're evaluating them on the mound (Remember Stange giving up that walk-off 3-run homer in that back-breaking loss against the Rangers?). I'd rather sign someone who, you know, is actually good to begin with so you don't have to play Russian roulette with every acquisition.

His minor league numbers aren't that impressive, either, though.  4.25 career minor league ERA.  1.52 WHIP.  K rate is 6.9 per 9 IP.

Yep. He has no track record of being any good. I don't see why he should be on the 40-man.

He's a lefty who probably still has options. Maybe they expect he'll be part of a trade package to a team not expecting to contend. Maybe he has a history with one of the scouts or coaches. Is it worth the heartburn to sweat the roster this early?

Why would people get upset about this? Most likely he is in the minors and it is possible he will develop. Even if he doesn't it isn't like he is replacing anyone worth a damn down there. The constant negativity and overreaction is downright stupid.

For a team with little depth pitching, what did people expect?  For 90% on this board, it's probably nothing less than that Price would be waived and the Angels claim and keep him.  

 

It's more than likely just for AAA depth.  And if he doesn't work out, doesn't really cost us anything to hit the eject button.

You know AO, you are putting a hex on Berg, just like you did with Kohn. Three years ago everything you are saying about Berg you were saying about Kohn, that turned out well. I'm guessing that if Berg was great he would have been up this year. You do understand that the Angels want to win, right? Who cares that they picked up this guy? Who cares that he is taking up a spot on the 40 man roster in October? It doesn't really matter at this point. Be patient, the team has made exactly one offseason move that matters and that's signing Baylor, which I am pretty sure we can all agree is a good one.

Also the following:

 

1) He has a good, solid pitching frame that scouts like/love.

2) He is a left-handed pitcher which has a bit more value.

3) He is only 23 years old

4) His 2012-2013 Minor League career numbers show a decent platoon split vs. left-handed hitters, making him a possible LOOGY specialist.

5) We have plenty of room on the 40-man at the moment so there is no reason to not give him a look.

6) The front office may be looking to outright him down at an appropriate time to provide depth for the Major League club.

7) Moves like this are usually about depth not finding our next starting 3B or closer. He is a potential Scott Downs type replacement.
