Scott Downs can't catch a break

For his first 1.5 seasons here, Downs was basically a lefty Uehara for us.

Then it all came unraveled for him after the 2012 ASB.

Just like Speier!   What is it about acquiring Toronto pitchers, and seeing them do great for 1.5 seasons, and then quickly and totally unravel?

Downs was very good this year. He was the Angels' best reliever before being traded.

I'm not seeing the similarities.

Speier had one great half for us, one mediocre one, followed by 2 seasons/108 innings of 5+ ERA relief.

Downs was pretty consistently great before and after the 2nd half of 2012.

Good point on 2013, although he became a true lefty specialist this season, unlike his first two seasons here.

Hence, the drop off in innings/appearance

Also, his WHIP was pretty high (1.26) for a sub 2.00 ERA here in 2013.   How many inherited runners did he allow to score compared to 2011-2012?

Downs had a pretty good run as an Angel (better than most of our relief pitcher signings) but he was not, contrary to the arguments of some here, a valuable chip at the trade deadline...Rasmus didn't impress and there was a reason for that---he's not very good, at least not at this point...

I seem to remember a lot of inherited runners crossing the plate when Downs would come in, but maybe I'm wrong.

His numbers look good if you look at the stats, but again, if he was not even considered for the NL Postseason, I think that says more of what other teams think of him than what the Angels did.

Wow, I forgot all about Justin Speier; but yeah, that's a great comparison, AO.
