It's too bad this didn't happen a year sooner so they could make a run at Francona.  I'm not sure which available managers are any good.

Let's see who will be available. Some may quit.

And some may be managing in the minors right now, or coaching in the majors.

From what I read on Martinez, he's the guy who's responsible for the clubhouse culture in Tampa.  He says he and Maddon are on the same page most of the time but when he has a different opinion, he has no problem telling Maddon.  He said he wasn't hired to be Maddon's 'yes' man and that's what Maddon loves about him the most.  He's a Maddon's disciple.  Maddon practically called irreplaceable but understands his true calling is as a manager.

Not only that, but willing to take over a team who just slipped below .500 despite significant increases in payroll, and locked in with Pujols and Hamilton until several of us hit retirement age.

Everyone on the Rangers SB nation site wants Martinez to manage Texas but sadly it doesn't look like Washington is going anywhere for at least a year.

Why lock ourselves into a veteran manager? Especially given the caliber of managers you're likely looking at being available that fit that mold this offseason.

I'm not opposed to hiring a veteran manager in general, but I can't think of one that's a realistic option that I find particularly appealing.

I rather give Vizquel or Bogar or Martinez from TB a shot at the job, then settle for the retreads of the league just because they've done it before.
