"Mike is a terrific player and obviously we're thrilled with his contributions both on the field and off," Angels General Manager Jerry Dipoto told The Times. "He has made a tremendous impact on this organization over the last two seasons and will continue to be a core member of our roster as we move forward."

That could leave room for interpretation, so would Dipoto simply say the Angels are not interested in trading Trout?

"No problem," Dipoto said. "We have no interest in trading Mike Trout."

Trout, 22, is not eligible for salary arbitration until 2015 and cannot file for free agency until after the 2017 season. There appears to be little incentive for either side to sign a long-term deal this winter -- the Angels do not need to assume the risk of a significant injury, and Trout does not need to commit to the Angels until they demonstrate he can win in Anaheim.

Everyone!  And I mean Everyone needs to be fired if there is no effort to extend Trout this off season.

4 years is a lot of time, will it be that much cheaper if we do it this year vs next?

I dont see the rush unless its 2016 already

It's not so much that he will be cheaper, as that he will likely continue to be an Angel beyond his six contractually obligated seasons.

Trout needs to continue putting up all time great numbers to get that huge contract while the Angels can offer him whatever salary they want, but just for one more year. After next year Mike will likely get the highest one year contract ever awarded to a first year arbitration eligible player - he wont get that big contract yet, but he'll still be set for life. Once he gets those millions he has little incentive to take a below market deal from the Angels before reaching free agency.

So are you saying he will take a below market deal now if the Angels act fast?

No that's not what he was saying, but there's more motivation for him to do so now than there would be further down the line.

Obviously none of us know for sure what Trout would take.

They gave him a raise last year the equivalent of about 3 innings of Josh Hamilton's pay for one game.

Smooth move.  Real Heads Up move.

Have you ever once, just once, thought why they would do such a thing?

Maybe you could ask his agent but I doubt the guy is going to point the finger at himself.

He should get a decent raise this season. He proved that his rookie campaign wasn't a fluke. The Angels were playing it safe and smart. Now is the time to open the pocket book and give the kid a raise. Wait it out another year before we try and lock him up long term though.

He should get at least a million dollars next year. Minimum. That's chump change compared to the gazillions we're paying the alleged superstars.
