Why is Trout stealing less?

2012: 54 stolen base attempts in 139 games = 0.39 attempts per game.

2013: 40 stolen base attempts in 151 games = 0.26 attempts per game.

To put that in context, if Trout was attempting to steal at the same rate this year as last he would have tried 59 times already - 19 more than he actually has. That's a substantial difference. Now early on in the year we heard that Albert Pujols didn't like people stealing bases when he was batting. Whether or not that impacted Trout, it doesn't seem like he's stealing more now with Albert out.

Any ideas?

Because he's fat.  Duh.

But you look at all the greats modern hitters, they were able to steal, but then decrease that and keep their hitting up.  Bonds, Gwynn, Afraud, etc.

Might also be a durability issue.  Going all out, sliding into second.  Then having to go back because of a foul, over a course of a year, and even a career, is very wearing on the body.

It's not even attempt per game.

He's also getting on base at a higher clip this year so he should have more chances at stealing too.

He is also scoring less runs than last year which is partyly caused by less steals.
