CJ Wilson on Calhoun

I thought this was a pretty amazing complement.  Wonder if the other guys feel the same.

 

C.J. Wilson was very complimentary of Kole Calhoun, who he's really grown to like as a teammate: “Overall, he’s one of those guys that the sum is greater than the parts. If you look at him on paper, he’s not one of those guys like Trout who’s going to wow you. It’s not like he’s 6-3, 240. But he’s got great strike-zone discipline, he uses the whole field, he has an incredible arm, he runs really good routes in the outfield. He just plays baseball really well. He’s a tremendous baseball player as a whole. If we had more guys like him, we’d be better off, because he brings every single freckle and every inch to the batter’s box and to the outfield every at-bat, every game. He’s super, super locked in. He’s just got great focus. And he’s a fun guy. He’s one of those guys that if you know him at all, you have to root for him, because he’s one of the best guys I’ve ever been around, attitude-wise.” #Angels

Calhoun MUST, MUST play at least 140 games in 2014. It looks like either Bourjos or Trumbo will definitely be traded after the season for pitching.

Scioscia was showering praise on Calhoun in the postgame interview as well.  I get the feeling we're going to be seeing a lot of him next year.

Calhoun is just one of those scrappy guys who plays the game the right way. 

 

I can see that the players Scioscia would gravitate to the most would be Calhoun and Shuck.

Gotta love Calhoun. Got to meet him in 2011 after a 66ers game. He went 3-4 with a monster 3-run homer to win the game. He had the biggest smile on his face after that game. Like a kid who just won a lifetime supply of candy. He is someone who truly loves this game. I'm glad we got him and I'm so stoked that he is succeeding in the show.

Yep, even after Calhoun let a ball bounce over his head for a triple which eventually led to the Blue Jays scoring a go ahead run. Of course CJ was as much to blame for not covering behind third on the relay.

Grant Green can't play 2B.  Any future where he is our everyday 2B worries me.  Just about every defensive metric out there paints him as awful, which is pretty much in line with what the eye tests are showing IMO.  

 

Dude is stiff and gives up on plays far too easily IMO.  I also hope Trumbo is traded.  His current hot streak is nice, the weak OBP and 3 months disappearing act every year has grown old.

I guess by "on paper" CJ just means stature wise and not statistics wise. Kole Calhoun is a solid ball player, statistically. And for me he is exactly what this team needs as far as OBP, plate discipline, etc.

 

His career major league numbers so far are a realistic guess for what he could do. .276/.345/454. With all the hackers in this lineup is there any reason he shouldn't be batting leadoff?

If Calhoun is this good.  He should be able to get us a #1 or #2 pitcher.  Hamilton, Trout, and Pujols have already made him very expendable.
