I have been to Texas, Florida, New Orleans, Chicago, Missouri, Ohio, etc. in the summer. The last week in So Cal has nothing on those places.

I was in Bakersfield one afternoon some years ago and it was 108 in the shade. I thought I was going to die. My buddy and I found the nearest bar and it felt like a refrigerator inside. They really crank up the AC there.

Yep.  Chicago summers are this but with more humidity.  Every day.

True, and they also have nothing on SoCal's high cost of living. SoCal folks don't have that high cost of living (especially mortgage/rent) so that they can deal with 95 and 60% humidity.

We had a mild July and August, so I suppose we're due for some heat. As AO said, though, the higher humidities in recent summers are unusual by historical standards.

Burbank had a 'low' of 81 last Friday, an all-time record high minimum temperature for any day of the year. Records go back to the late 19th century.

That is the worst part.  When we lived in Fresno I hated the fact that even after the sun went down it was still 80-90 degrees.  No relief from the heat.

At 11 AM it's already 94 in Long Beach and humid. I'm thinking 100 degrees today, easily.

 

The heat is expected to intensify as the week goes on.

Maybe in number of days like this, but not that much worse in intensity

Plus, again, it doesn't cost nearly as much to live in those parts of the country. 

We don't pay top dollar to live in this crap weather for as long as it's been going on (back to going on 2 weeks).

Expect another week at least of even higher temps. And as you pointed out, the humidities are unusual and make it even worse to bear.
