All reports point to the deal being done on July 6 and the Lakers having $24 million to spend. Tough to build a team around $24 million. They basically have 3 starters and 3 bench warmers signed.

Now add in a free agent, exemption(s) and draft picks.

You're worrying about nothing

A clarification on the haul of draft picks heading the Pelicans' way. The 2021 pick goes to New Orleans if it's in the top eight, if not they'll get an unprotected first in 2022. Swap in 2023. Unprotected first in 2024, with a right to defer to 2025.

Trade by the numbers

2: of the top three players all time in player efficiency rating now will be on the Lakers (LeBron 27.6; Davis 27.4)
5: players under contract for the Lakers next season once the trade is official (LeBron, Davis, Moritz Wagner, Kyle Kuzma, Isaac Bonga)
6: seasons Davis has averaged 20 PPG and 19 RPG (no other player has a streak longer than three)
7: former No. 1 picks who will play alongside LeBron James in his career (Davis, Kyrie Irving, Derrick Rose, Greg Oden, Andrew Bogut, Joe Smith, Shaquille O'Neal)
7: players who have averaged 25 PPG and 10 RPG, then changed teams in the offseason (Davis, O'Neal, DeMarcus Cousins, Kevin Love, Moses Malone, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elvin Hayes)
25-1: Lakers' title odds on May 15, per Caesars Sportsbook; those odds are now down to 7-2
99: 30-point, 10-rebound games for Davis since entering the league in 2012-13; that's 25 more than the next closest player (Russell Westbrook)

you go out and get Lebron then you've got to make a deal like this.

Neither Ball nor Ingram were a good fit with LBJ here anyway.

they definitely need a guy like Walker now.

personally, I would have preferred them sticking with the youth movement but all those high draft picks haven't led to a franchise player.

They'll get a couple other exemptions to fill out the team.   I hope they stay away from guys like Butler and Cousins.

Another dynamic shooter would be great.  Or a top notch defender vs. guard play.

Although the Lakers and Pels have agreed on the trade parameters, I guarantee the actual completion of the trade won't happen until July 30 or later.  That will allow the Lakers to retain $32 million of cap space.  They will draft the player at #4 and sign him.  They will then use the cap space.  Then, a month later they will trade the package for AD.  We can sign anyone we want.

What's in it for the pelicans?

Damon Jones said there is an 'earth breaking' free agency news with respect to Lakers.
Immediately after, Cris Carter retweeted that, and posted 'Sshh, let's compare our info. Watch my show for the newest update on Kawhi, the biggest FA this offseason'

Also, apparently his cousin posted a minute long video on Instagram stating that Kawhi is going to the Lakers.

well, it looks like either chris paul or james harden will be available. situation in houston between the two of them is being described as "unsalvageable."

i'd be interested in chris paul. harden is a ball hog who plays defense about as well as pujols steals bases.

No way they trade Harden. Paul is basically untradable, however. He's owed $38M and $41M over the next two years. Plus, he had a player option for&44M the year after.

I wouldn't think that Chris Paul is tradeable with that deal.  However, if you look at a team like Phoenix, they have hovered in mediocrity for a decade trying to build with the kids.  They could probably take on his contract and build a deal around the #6 pick hoping that he, Booker and Ayton could form a nice threesome and Paul could bring vet leadership.  Paul ends his career there.  Possibly.  Just sayin' there's a chance!

$120 for chris paul FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS?!?!?

what kind of alternate universe have i stumbled into?

Chris Paul is president of the union and negotiated the current structure which allowed him to sign his 4 year 160M contract at the age of 33.  At the age of 36 he will be making 44M to which I say good for him but that contract was a mistake on Houston's part from the get go.

There's definitely a chance some team acquires Paul and thankfully that won't be the Lakers.  He's a good player but he's had a knack for getting injured when the playoffs roll around, has had falling outs or tension with teammates everywhere he's played and has averaged 59 games played during the regular season over the last 3 years.  The best situation for him is probably a young team where he can be the veteran who the younger guys don't butt heads with.

I love the purchasing of a 2nd rounder last night and the selection of THT!  Young guy, just 18.  But that is a dude with some reach (6'4" or 6'5" with 7'1" reach) and no need to put weight on (235 lb).  Will be fun to watch in summer league to see if he can "bump" guys around.  Feels like he can play the 1, 2 or 3 offensively and guard 2, 3 and sometimes 4's if need be.  Could see him eventually getting minutes in the second unit next season.  We'll see.

Norvell could be interesting end of the bench guy too (may not see the floor at the big league level though in year 1).

THT has an interesting skill set (including 3 pt. skills) with that weight and wingspan, that might allow him to be a solid wing in the NBA in another couple of years.

Hey, if Draymond Green can be a solid post player at his height, who knows.

Lakers always seem to unearth someone at each draft, like with Kuz and Hart.
