From the LA Times - Angels' Jerry Dipoto speaks to the SABR rattlers

Analytics can break player performance down to statistical categories, but the general manager still champions the the human aspect of the game.

PHOENIX — I write this column with a headache. I went to a meeting of the SABR Analytics Conference here Thursday night. The throbbing may never stop.

all stats can be manipulated to mean almost anything. there's a place for the old school as well as the new- like WHIP. but an intelligent mix of stats, feel and experience to eval player performance is the smartest method. human behavior cannot be totally quantified. neither can player performance. trends can be established, but people are just too goofy to accurately predict thier behavior with statistical methods no matter how fancy, arcane or elegant the formulas are.

The reason why people say stats can be manipulated to mean anything is because there are other people with agendas who use stats to mislead. You see this countless times in countless studies, whether it be about vaccinations and autism or the "rape" problem at college campuses. These stats have been conjured through flawed methology.

However, when stats are done the correct way, with the scientific process of it all, they are very accurate. Advanced stats do not have an agenda and they have a high correlation to what is actually happening on the baseball field. Do you think it is a coincidence scouting has become more and more accurate every single year? Do you think it is a coincidence the best front offices in baseball use these stats the most.

Advanced stats are not manipulated because there is no agenda with them. We know the accuracy of it and saying you can't accurately predict things with them is pretty ignorant. We can and that's why front offices use them.

Agree and disagree. Stats can be manipulated to mean different things yet they are only misleading if someone purposefully intends them to be or if there is a lack of understand of how the stat is arrived and where it's strengths and weaknesses reside.

There is no doubt that every team uses some level of advanced metric analysis yet they can pick and choose how those metrics are accumulated.

the holy grail of any baseball stat is to find a correlate to winning ballgames that costs a team less money to do so. ie the undervalued or moneyball stat.

Everyone on the planet knows that creating runs with offense/baserunning or saving runs with defense and pitching are the ultimate goal to help create wins. Yet no team has unlimited payroll so the team's proprietary stats aim to maximize unique factors to a specific ball club. park factors, weather, defensive strengths/weaknesses, managerial/coaching tendencies etc.

They manipulate their stats to enhance their ability to find runs and therefore wins in places that other teams may not have or in spots they haven't looked.

When your GM is a speaker to the cyber community it likely means he has a very strong understanding of how this aspect of the game can be helpful.

JD has been a bit of a fox when it comes to this. I think he downplays how important he thinks this is as to keep from alienating the general fan but I think it's a really big part of his process.

I'm just shocked that article didn't include something about those people living in their mom's basement. Or how they just want computers to run the game instead of actual people.

Or how these people just need to put away their calculators and watch the game for once.

Better luck next time, Bll.
