so if someone assumed hamilton's contract without anything else in exchange, he'd have to go to whomever claimed him?

It's VERY unlikely that any team would assume his contract. I dont know if he has a no trade cluase, but if he doesn't he would have to go to the team that claimed him (if that team isn't on the list of one of the teams that he doesn't want to be traded to).

The player still has his no trade clause and could still block it. That is my understanding of the rules.

bummer. i'd be happy for him to leave for nothing in return.

He does have a no trade clause, so I am guessing he could block it. There really isn't any team that would pick him up. Hell even if he was having a great year I am not sure anyone would pick him up. His contract gets worse and worse from here on out. So if he was batting .280 with 25 home runs and 90 rbi, he would still be owed $98 Million over the next four years, $30 million of that in his final season.

stranger things have happened. for instance some idiotic team trading with the blue jays for vernon wells.

I think Hamilton will bounce back and have a solid year next year, not a $25 million year, but maybe a $15 million year, which is what he is scheduled to be paid next year.

I have a feeling the Angels may be active in the claiming portion of the waiver wire.  They may not get anything.  But they will put claims in.  Heck, any above average pitcher gets waived, we should put a claim in.

I'd be fine with us taking some fliers on some veteran pitchers. I am guessing we will see some younger pitchers that are non tendered, like some think Hanson will be, and the Angels take a look at them in the off season.
