Best Military/War Movie

My favorite is Full Metal Jacket. Saving Private Ryan's combat scenes are incredible.

I love Full Metal Jacket but it's always been more because of the first half of the film.  Even then it would probably be between Full Metal Jacket and The Thin Red Line.

 

 

I'd also toss in The Battle of Algiers. Not a traditional war film, but if it counts, might be my favorite.

The Vietnam scenes in The Deer Hunter are pretty amazing too. Forgot about that one.

FMJ would be my second favorite followed by Apocalypse Now.

Pure entertainment= Full Metal Jacket. I've watched the entire movie about 5 times but the first half about 100 times.

Historical Significance = Saving Private Ryan

Edge of my seat= Black Hawk Down. That entire movie was non-stop action.

It's great. Highly recommend checking it out. And while you're at it, not war movies, but the same director has made some other amazing movies: Le Samourai, Le Cercle Rouge, and Bob le Flambeur.

Saving Private Ryan is my favorite.  I remember when it came out the criticism was that the battle scenes were too real.  Another one that I like that definitely isn't in the same tier that wasn't meantioned is Hamburger Hill.  Them losing so many men going up the hill only to turn around and abandon it kind of summed up Vietnam.
