Blowing up the team

Recommended Posts

Getting Grant Green and Cory Rasmus is a step in the right direction. But, I don't think it's enough.  Barring the entire team playing above their heads, I don't see how this team contends in 2014.  Every area (line-up, starting pitching, bullpen, defense, farm system) needs significant improvement.  Unfortunately, the contract structures of the many of the key players prohibit a Red Sox style detonation.  And, not to mention, blowing up the team requires a commitment to the process.  The team would have to let go of some good players, that I really like (Vargas, Kendrick, Aybar, Trumbo, Frieri, etc.) in order to build up the farm system.  And, we would have to cringe and bear this team losing a lot of games. There will be a lot of F--- this team threads and Fire Dipoto, Scioscia, everybody threads.  While losing does really hurt, losing also helps us in that it would give us a better draft position.

So, if you're Dipoto, how would you go about this?  Or do you see a way to reload instead of rebuild?

The Angels have tried the "reload" approach for the last 4 years.  How's that workin' out for them?

I'd rather give up 2014 and 2015 for a possible run in 2016 and beyond.

Too many fans are just too impatient to allow the Angels to do what's best for the organization in the long term by insisting they are only a precious few pieces and fewer injuries away from contention at this point.

You don't have to "Blow up the Team" as you say.  To compete for the playoffs next year they need five quality starting pitchers.  Right now they have two Weaver and Wilson.  Hopefully they resign Vargas and he is your #3.  Richards is your #4, and we have to get one more good one.  Hanson is good for depth and long relief in my mind.

The bullpen has to be addressed.  We need a closer, a lefty specialist, and probably one more solid reliever.  Hopefully Burnett is back and healthy.  Hopefully Maronde shows he is a major league pitcher.  that would leave us with just the need of a closer.

Offensively we really don't need any help.  Losing Callaspo provides a hole at 3b.  Problem is we will probably trade Kendrick for a starter in the off season so we will have to hope that Green or Lindsay is able to make the jump.

So I say no to a complete blow up of the team.
