The best offseason move Dipoto can make: dump Scioscia.  They don't appear to be on the same page perhaps because Scioscia is continually turning them.

To play devil's (MT's) advocate: we gave Reagins a lot of shit pretty much right after his first year and wanted him gone by the end of his second year (or even halfway through it). Why are we giving more slack to Dipoto?

Hint: I think it's because he's white.

Uhh no. Reagins came aboard in late 07 and we then proceeded to have two fantastic regular seasons in a row. Everyone really liked reagins up until he started making boneheaded signings like Rodney and then of course the biggie, wells for Napoli. The hate didn't really begin until the halos shat the bed in the second half of 10'.

Rays have a bunch of 4A players with a couple good pitchers mixed in.

I think ragging on the bad farm system is over played too. Farm system strength is cyclical for teams. Teams with strong farms that finish in playoff positions for several years start to see their farm diminished as players move up or are traded. Having lower draft positions several years running since the team was finishing high, means the likelihood of maintaining farm strength is less. This isn't an Angel thing, this happens all the time. Building up the farm again doesn't happen over night. It's going to take a while.   

Except it hasn't happened to the Cardinals.

So every other GM is just lucky that their guys worked out or they didn't sign certain guys. But Dipoto is great he can do no wrong and every move he made was just unlucky but wait till next year? Did I get that right?

Overall a good thread MT.  Good points on both sides.

 

Personally, I am not in the 'fire Dipoto' camp.  The only moves he did before the season began that I was against was signing Blanton and trading for Hansen.  There was no reason to think either of those guys would be decent.  None.

 

The rest were moves that on paper, were good.

 

Neither Dipoto or Sosh can make guys like Hamilton produce like they should.  That is on the players.
