Frieri will be a great setup man whenever we get a real closer. I wouldn't be too upset if we traded him (mainly cause I cooled off from last night's game and didn't see today's) but we all know if he was with a good coaching staff he'd have a changeup and be borderline dominant.

The irony is that Frieri was Jerry Dipoto's lone good trade (at least before Green, which remains to be seen). Neither Amarista or Roach will be stars, but both look like useful role-players.

This team doesn't NEED a closer. They need to match up lineups to pitchers to prevent losing games.

 

It's this old Scioscia formula that has for some reason become the norm even though it hasn't worked for the past 4 years.

There's no problem with the idea of a closer. We just need the right one. Fans were content with Percival even when he blew a few and K-Rod.

 

Frieri is a good pitcher in the wrong situation.

We swapped out a closer with 1 pitch, straight 98, for another closer with 1 pitch, straight 94.  At this point, Frieri is a situational righty, which is a long way from a closer.

I get that some pitchers struggle against certain teams, but Frieri literally should never face another Rangers hitter for the rest of his career. He is their bitch and he knows it.

Other than that he's ok. Probably shouldn't be the closer.
