this phone is not for americans who cant afford the normal one - its for emerging markets like india and china.

and its a very smart move; long time coming.

 

in india, for a software engineer, it still costs 2 months salary to buy an iphone.

thats insane. 

they have had success with payment plans but they still need a lower-cost version that still gets them stuck to the ecosystem.

up until now its been the older models.

 

but a new, plastic, non-LTE version with a bunch of colors will sell like gang busters out there. 

and those markets are absolutely massive.
