US Open Unrest

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I think that was 4th of July.  Either way, it's what happens in HB during the summer.

Only way to fix it is to get rid of all alcohol at the beach.

Actually it was the '86 OP Pro (which eventually turned into the US Open.)

Back then they sold alcohol at the event but they don't anymore.

From the LA Times today...

Of those arrested in connection with the riot, only one was from Huntington Beach: 24-year-old Andres Gomez, who was booked on suspicion of refusing to disperse and resisting arrest.

Huntington Beach police said the others booked on suspicion of charges related to disorderly conduct and resisting arrest include Michael John Lytle, 30, of Anaheim; Michael Anthony Avila, 28, of Santa Ana; Joseph Monterrosa, 28, of Ontario; Adam A. Cecot, 18, of Irvine; Chase Scott Christman, 19, of Simi Valley; and Kyle Roger Crott, 18, of Riverside.

Additional arrests are expected as police sift through the dozens of photos and videos of the violence.

First off, That was a horrible pic....  My eyes are on strike now.

I was there in '86 for the original riot.  I was an 18 year old skateboarder, and went down with some  friends to watch the skateboarding (because we could always just watch ourselves surfing...).  We parked waay North of the Pier, and walked-in as we saw the black smoke starting to rise.  The smoke was from the Police car that was set on fire in front of the Lifeguard Headquarters on the bike path (the photo looks to be from that day).  We walked onto the beach, and made it just South of the Pier when we saw a wall of multi-jurisdictional/mutual-aid Officers pushing/directing everyone North.  I was kneeling against my skateboard in the sand under the Pier, when I felt a glitch in the matrix.  An OCSD Deputy (along with some friends) had flanked us, and he tried to cut my board in half with a full-swing of his baton.  I was thankful that he didn't swing at me, and we immediately moved along North-bound and off the beach.

I haven't been back for the "surf contest" since; I find that walking the Pier to lunch and watching other surfers, or paddling-out myself on occasion is enough excitement.

I'm surprised that it got this out-of-hand this year.  I figured that HBPD had it crushed after '86, with a mutual-aid plan in-place.  At the first sign of a problem, I thought they'd swoop-in, hook the fool up, and squash any other moronic ideas....

It's funny; my buddy hit me up to roll down there to visit his friends' booth Sunday.... but, I told him about my luck in going to the "surf contest" and decided against it.

Keyword: mutual aid plan

Except for routine calls and events planned for in advance, mutual aid seems to be a complete clusterf*ck in Orange County.  Anything big happens and it's widespread chaos.  Police and Fire.

Within the last year there was a structure fire residential in Fullerton that went to a third or fourth alarm.  Fullerton and the surrounding cities were depleted of resources.  Anaheim and OCFA were stingy about moving engines up, so get this...a Costa Mesa engine was moved up to Fullerton and two Huntington Beach engines were moved up to Brea.

Maybe its wasting my time trying to come up with rational reasoning, but I have seen the escalation of anger amongst this young generation and I don't really understand where it's coming from. These people have been given everything they need to succeed, they live in the greatest country in the world, and this is how they show their appreciation?

This youth is apparently filled with irrational anger and gets utopian joy from destruction of society. A society built by the hard working generation before it, and one that every single one of these low lifes does not appreciate and is taking advantage of. It's like they're thinking "This sh*t is waaay too nice, let me find out every possible way to destroy it!" Where did this come from? I have never in my life felt the need to vent my feelings in a way that affects other peoples property. Tipping over porter potties? Really? It's a group of miscreants that constantly need to be babysat, and if you're not watching for one second they're going to find some way to take advantage, find your nice thing and destroy it. And if you catch them they're going to come up with some bullsh*t excuse as to why you can't hold them accountable.

Sadly, I have seen this de-evolution everyday in our youth as I've gotten older. I see profanity laced t-shirts with guns and nude women in porn star positions, unfit for the eyes of the public or young kids who haven't even began their youth. BIG BOLD statements idolizing ignorance and stupidity, spreading vulgarity and a sense of "i don't give a f***" amongst peers. Praise of disrespect towards peoples privacy & property, all with an interest of shock value, short attention spans, and a collective disinterest in bettering society and a community. This stuff is constantly promoted through clothing, advertising, internet, culture, music, and television. Who is turning a blind eye and allowing these types of people to be raised this way and why are they doing such a shitty job? And why is this low-life-loser-bum kind of lifetyle being promoted and why are these kids attracted to it? Where did this stem from?

It's obvious the age group in the video was 16-20. It looked like there was literally nobody who was 21 doing this stuff in the video. So lets see...these kids get tattoos, buy a pack of cigarettes, put on a tank, flip their snap-back on backwards and all of a sudden think they're somebodies because they're in Huntington Beach. Then they go and crap on society as hard as they can. And it's like they're pushing the envelope to expose the weakness of our American "good samaritan" society just to see what they can get away with when nobody's watching. It's freakin' disgusting, and its as if these kids have never been whacked or disciplined for being out of line.

I'm also blown away that a larger police force was not out busting asses and throwing these kids to the ground. Kick a porter potty, destruction of public property you're under arrest. Basically they let these adolescents run hog wild 1/4 mild away as they slowly made a sweep down Main Street from the beach. Ridiculous. A complete failure by law enforcement in my opinion. When you let a group of teens get away with this kind of crap, it just enforces their belief that they can get away with this kind of garbage with little to no consequence, reinforcing the thought that if they could get away with this, there's plenty more where that came from.

Maybe its proof that a generation of self-entitleds aren't capable of handling the trials and tribulations of real life? Because in my opinion each and every one of the kids in this video looks like someone who would not qualify for working at McDonalds, nonetheless a place where you'd have a career. And furthermore, what the hell are we going to do with all these low lifes within arms reach of our society? They're going to be around and there's not a lot we can do about it. That scares me more than anything.

I will tell you one thing, there's a reason I keep a 34/31 in the trunk of my car, and with the "anarchy" these kids feel like they were participating in, they're damn lucky I didn't pick the same day to be down there, because if I saw this crap going on, I'd show them a thing or two about what anarchy and unrest is really about.

...and kids 10 years ago, and kids 20 years ago, and kids 30 years ago, and kids 40 years ago...

I'll stop at kids 70 years ago, because at least those kids were targeted at the Nazis. My point is, lets stop this "get off my lawn" stuff. It's no excuse, and these kids SHOULD be punished, but lets stop pretending that we all never had the urge of peer pressure to do something dangerous and/or illegal to impress our friends. Whether it's hucking a rock through an abandoned house's window, jumping off a building into a pool, or knocking over a portable toilet, or even acting like you're rioting.

I guess that's my point. The same peer pressure we are warned about when we were kids, is still there. You can act like this is a new thing, but kids doing stupid stuff is an omnipresent issue. It's always been there and always will be there.

Leave it to me to mention an unrelated fire department story from Fullerton earlier in this thread.  It was revealed today that a Fullerton Firefighter was one of the douchebags arrested for disorderly conduct at the US Open.

I talked back to my mom when she shrunk my Jordache jeans. I was heated.

I talked back to my mom one time in the car on the ride home from school...

...and she backhanded the sh*t out of me while driving before I even had a chance to see it coming.

I wish parents were more like my mom these days...
