Angels trade international money to Mets

So the Angels didn't trade $360k, instead they traded their 51st pick in the international draft. Big deal...HUGE DEAL!!! FRANCHISE OVER!!!!!

There is no international draft and there is no draft pick. They traded what they call "slot value". Each team has four "slots" that are assigned a dollar value. Teams add those values together in addition to a base sum ($700k for 2013) to get their total spending amount. Teams can blow it all on one player or spread it evenly. They don't have to stick to "slots" because there is no draft. So it's true we didn't trade money. We traded the right to spend the money.

I don't know if it's a huge deal or not but it's probably unnecessary and looks like another poor Dipoto move.

"The Angels sent international slot bonus to the Mets in exchange for two Minor Leaguers, outfielder Julio Concepcion and right-hander Andres Perez. Concepcion will be assigned to rookie-level Orem and Perez goes to the Arizona Summer League. The Mets essentially get an extra $360,000 to spend in this international signing period."

I would think you would get a decent prospect for $360,000.00.

Someone may have answered this already but I don't believe the Angels actually sent the Mets $360k, rather the Angels set the Mets the right to spend an additional $360k in the international market. The slot system is nothing more than a salary cap on non-union players.

*Ok ya it looks like a few people igured this out already ;-)

the halos clearly had no intention on spending that money so instead of letting it float in the breeze, they got a couple of players for it.  this would have gone completely under the radar had the team not spent to their maximum alloted amount.

If your foreign scouting is not fully ramped up enough to feel confident in spending on certain players then you don't spend it.  It doesn't mean that they shouldn't or won't in the future.  It just means that they aren't in a place to feel good about it yet.

Would you have them throw money at guys because other teams are or would you rather they actually create a situation where spending on foreign players is well crafted and appropriate?  When they feel confident to do so, they will.
