What if Blanton was a .500 pitcher right now?

In baseball it's rare to be able to point to one player as having such a large impact on your team as to either be the sole reason for being a first place team or last place team. Blanton comes close to being this type player.

With Blanton, I was thinking what if he had simply been able to picth to a .500 record this season to this point. How would this affect our overall view of the team and the feeling of being a contender this year. We obviously wouldnt be in first place but we would be right in the thick of things.

On the flip side what if he was lights out this year. Not Cy Young candidate or anything but lets say was like 9-4. NOw we are knocking on the door of first place. In Blanton's defense, he has not pitched as bad as his record shows but he has not displayed consistency to pitch to the game situation. He consistently seems to pitch his team to a run deficit and in cases where his team gets him a lead he gives up the lead quick.

Every team can play that "what if" game with the players that are playing poorly or are injured. They're all just excuses. The good teams/organizations find ways to overcome injuries and players that have worse than expected seasons.

Wilson 10 - 6

Vargas 6 -4 (out indefinitely)

Hanson 4-2 (appeared in 9 games all season)

Blanton is the tip of the iceberg on this pleasure cruise

you should know by now that a pitcher's win-loss record is meaningless. he's not a very good pitcher but he's lost a few games in which he's actually pitched well.
