Garza to miss start tonight...(Traded to Texas Rangers)

Recommended Posts

The Angels need to trade anyone they can(not named Trout) to get a better farm.  I read that Abyar and Downs could attract attention and the Angels should go for it.  This team is not going to the playoffs so they might as well do whatever they can to improve their future.

Olt's star has faded lately, but he should still be a solid bat at 3B, which is a weak position these days. Could be a Mark Trumbo like bat but at 3B. CJ Edwards is having a breakout season and his stock is rising, so Cubs did good to get him here. All in all a very good deal for Chicago

Garza gives the Rangers another solid starter for the stretch run as they battle with Oakland for the division and for a wild card spot. This deal means nothing for the Halos since they are not in contention anyway

This is a fantastic trade for the Angels. Rangers deplete their farm system, get 0 draft compensation for Garza and, even if he resigns with Texas, they will only get him at a market rate contract.

Best news all season for the future of the Angels' chances to reclaim the AL West in the future.

you're kidding , right? insert sarcasm

Have not the rental deals hurt the current/future standing of the franchise?

1)  Make darned sure that if you do a rental deal, that the chances of getting to the post-season are very good or that the chances of resigning acquired player are very good (preferably when the trade happens), not like it was a year ago where we never were truly close enough and Greinke was anything BUT a sure thing to sign.

2)  if you are going to trade TWO good lefty prospects to get a veteran pitcher, please make sure you are seriously in a race and not like we were in late July 2010.   Preferably, two good lefty pitching prospects should NEVER, EEEEVER be traded at once.

In the past I've said rentals should only be done if getting into the playoffs is a virtual certainty, the rental can increase the chances of a team going deep into the playoffs. Rentals can be worth a lot because things like short series elevate the important of having a top of the rotation pitcher or elite position player. Acquiring Teixeira in 2009 was fine by that standard. Every move since losing Morales in 2010? not so much.

Under the new rules (no draft compensaton, one game playoffs for wild card), I'd say rentals are only a good idea if it's very likely the team will outright win the division.

Greinke trade when we were 5 games back in the division, with an especially thin farm system? not good.

Gotta favor the Cubs in that deal due to Edwards, but it's not terrible for the Rangers.  Olt is overrated and as good as Edwards looks it's A ball so he's got a ways to go.

Again can't blame the Rangers for pulling the trigger there and it should help them out a bit in chasing the A'th.

Why would the Angels need a playoff push rental?  Does anyone really believe the playoffs are even possible?

Secondly, in order to get said rental, prospects would need to be involved and given the Angels derth of those, it would make such a move challenging.  Let's not forget that if there is one thing this organization needs to do it is to re-stock the minors with talent.

If anything, the team may want to look at who they could move at the deadline for good prospects.

Epstein and Co. really know what they're doing right now.

I think the Cubs are going to be real contenders in a few years. If they can find a big superstar through free agency or via trade, they could be better even sooner.

Cubs.  Contenders. Winning.

Those are two adjectives that are not often associated with the Cubs.

Personally, I think Epstein is vastly overrated, but we shall see.

eh i'm ok with the trade. i like olt but he doesn't really have a place on the team and a lot of organizations seem to have soured on him. neil ramirez sucks and pitchers like cj edwards are a dime a dozen. luke jackson was the one player texas really didn't want to give up and they got their wish. it's one of those quantity over quality trades and they didn't deplete their farm.

what texas really needs now is a COF bat because david murphy sucks this year
