Gameday Thread: 3/5 Angels vs Reds

Jeff Fletcher saying Hanson was at 89-90 today.

Which actually might be decent news, if he's there in his 1st real outing of the Spring.

This IS good news. For any pitcher's first ST start that's good velo.

yeah that's what I was thinking.  Particularly without a DH (which means no Trumbo or Pujols essentially for at least the first few innings).

Could always stick Trumbo out in the OF with Trout back in CF. Then use Bourjos as a defensive replacement for Trumbo later in the game.

Which is what I would expect for NL games.

if thats the case then not too bad. you'd have to think he'll hit a little higher on the gun in another 2-3 weeks

Actually Wallerrrr, on average, velocity only increases by about a 1/2 mile per hour (usually no more than 1 mph) from Spring Training into the season.

However, 90 mph should be enough for Hanson if he can utilize his pitch mix which has a variety of speeds to keep hitter's off balance. His pitches have speeds ranging from the low 70's (Curve), to the low 80's (Slider and Change), to the high 80's/low 90's (Fastball) when running right. Somewhat similar to some of Jered's velocities except that Weaver is exceptional at precision control and maintaining his arm slot (hitting the corners and fooling the batters).

yeah, good call.  didn't even think of that.  however, this all assumes that Pujols is ready to play 1B by then.  It's possible he'll be the pinch-hitter.
