JULY 20, 2002

ANAHEIM – As much fun as the Angels had in their 15-3 win one day earlier, their dramatic rally and victory over the Seattle Mariners in the second game of the series was the type that could eventually be seen as the spark that ignited a championship season.

The Angels trailed, 5-1, early, but rallied with four runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to come away with a 7-6 victory before 43,109 at Edison Field.

Troy Glaus’ three-run homer in the seventh turned a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 lead, but the Mariners responded with a run in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 6.

That set the stage for Scott Spiezio in the bottom of the eighth, his solo homer off Arthur Rhodes lifting the Angels to the win, and moving them to within two games of Seattle in the A.L. West, the closest they've been in almost a month (June 23).

Angels starter John Lackey lasted only 3 2/3 innings, but the bullpen came to the rescue, Scot Shields (2-1) getting the victory and Ben Weber earning his third save.
