I have nervously eaten an entire bag of david sunflower seeds. I can no longer feel the tip of my tongue and both sides of cheeks are raw.

It shouldn't make any impact at all.

Sure it does.

If they had picked #1 and had Holliday, not much sense pursuing another long-term infield solution.

If they dropped way down, BPA all the way, could be OF, IF, SP.

At #2, with how quickly Perry promotes players, a close-to-bigs OF or SP could have impact on who they sign (multi-year or stopgap) or how much they want to hold on to Ward, Adell, Moniak, Detmers.

If they’re actually shopping Ward, they might shift some priority in who they seek if they already have someone like LaViolette in mind.

I disagree.  This isn't the NFL or NBA.  If a team is making decisions in an off-season based on who they might draft 8 months later, that's probably not a very smart team.

With the way the Angels have been promoting under Perry, I think it absolutely affects their multi year commitments. They’re building their minors with the 2-3-4-5 and 11th round guys. 1st rounder is expected to be up the year after he was drafted.

Ok.  I still pretty strongly disagree and feel that changing your off-season strategy based on your first round draft position is a pretty stupid and short-sighted approach, but to each his own.

One guy is a college player, the other is HS...

I don’t think it’s changing their strategy. I think it’s been part of the strategy.

Like @Hubs said, with the way Perry drafts and promotes quick-to-bigs guys, there’s no way that’s not part of their calculus. He’s got two years under contract and now the second-pick. I’m sure he already has an idea who he is hoping to get with that pick.

If it’s LaViolette (or really any college OF) I don’t think there’s nearly as much momentum behind finding anyone other than a 1-2 year FA commit - if they trade Ward. If they have faith in Adell or Moniak or Rada, maybe they back away looking for any OF help in trades and focus solely on other spots for those returns. If they really believe in LaViolette or Canarella, between one of them and Rada they might feel CF is set sooner rather than later and they can begin pushing Trout to a corner and pursue a stopgap defense-first CF with more gusto, or Bellinger instead of a pricier arm or IF.

It might make targeting a one-year SP much more appealing that trying to lock in another 3/$45M type if they want Jamie Arnold. It might make them feel a lot better parting with Reid Detmers now if they think Arnold could replace him in 2026.

And while I don’t expect or support it, if they are going after a QO-attached FA, it’s a little easier swallowing that pull when you have the #2 pick and a close to sure-thing pick vs. the uncertainty that increases with say the #10.

Didn’t say anything about it making them 180 and change directions significantly or that dramatic. It’s just another variable for them to consider.
