Look, hate may be too strong, but he doesn’t like baseball.

Ask anyone who covered him in Washington DC.

“I don’t watch baseball — it’s too long and boring,” he said.

“In addition, Rendon and his family have a rule that they won’t talk about baseball when he visits.“

And you think this means something, ok. I don’t visit food trucks when I’m off work.  I doubt Tank is teaching in his spare time and Blarg isn’t on photoshop getting rid of nip slips on the weekends. We aren’t our jobs.

You're right.

I'm putting them back in.

Oh yea!  When you hate what you do you never work on a day off in your life. Or something like that.

The Angels have done plenty of dumb/reckless/stupid things to be annoyed at.  That doesn’t mean you should categorize everything that hasn’t worked out for them as dumb/reckless/stupid.

Have a little discipline.

But this is a dumb/reckless/stupid thing.

Any process where the owner gets involved in baseball ops is dumb, reckless, and stupid. If you hire the GM to run baseball ops, let them run baseball ops. That would be a consensus opinion of all 30 GMs.

No one has to be their job, but that makeup dig is an important thing to do before investing $245M into a guy.

@Lazorko Saves gave a great example from his experience in the NHL.

Investing a 2nd round pick into a guy is maybe a few million dollar decision at most. Signing Rendon was a $245M decision.

Bitch about signing a guy that had an injury history, not because you think he hates baseball.

I don’t think he hates baseball, I know he does.

The evidence is there. You can choose to ignore it, if you want to be ignorant.

Ok kid. The evidence is he’s injured.

Dude, you are absolutely delusional if you think owners don’t “get involved” in the monster contract transactions.

There’s a difference between giving final approval and telling the agent that you’ve got eyes on the player and to keep you plugged in on it.

You are again completely delusional if you think an owner’s only involvement in monster contracts is “giving final approval.”

That's a thing of beauty.

$169 million so far for 3.7 WAR = $45.7M per WAR.

Albert was about $240M for 6.1 WAR = $39.3M per WAR.

Hamilton was about $108M for 2.4 WAR = $45M per WAR.

I think the Angels paid Vernon Wells about $75M for 0.6 WAR = $125M per WAR.

They paid about $130M to Justin Upton for 3.3 WAR = $39.4M per WAR.

Obviously Wells is the worst on a "per WAR" basis - he was just terrible. Rendon and Hamilton have been about the same, but Rendon is being paid more for longer, and Rendon's per WAR rate will almost certainly get worse. If he produced 0 WAR for the rest of his career, he'll be at around $66M per WAR.

Plus we gave up Napoli and Rivera lol

The next 4 years Napoli averaged 3.5 war per season.

Saw an interview with a hockey scout. He said they nonchalantly asked young prospects if they watched the hockey channel and/or the highlights from last night's games. A NO answer was a big red flag. They want players that are hardcore into the game. He went on to say they pasted on the number 3rd or 4th player in the country based on this question and he was out of hockey at 21 years old. Never panned out.

Was it this guy?

When I worked for an NHL team, one of the things we would try to dig into about the players we were considering drafting was their interest in the sport.  You'd try to find out which players watched a lot of NHL games on TV, watched all the nightly highlight shows, who were participating in hockey fantasy leagues, etc.  We'd ask their junior coaches if they "lived, breathed, and ate hockey".  When I met with players, I would see if they had interest in talking about their favorite NHL team, players, etc.

You'd be surprised how often there would be early round talents who just didn't much care for the sport.  It was always a red flag for us.

I even had one kid tell me outright, he couldn't wait for his junior hockey eligibility to run out.  He was only playing because his dad wanted him to.  We scratched him from our draft list entirely.  Another team spent an early 2nd round pick on him.  They signed him, and he languished in the AHL for three years of his entry level contract.  Never played again after that.  He was just collecting paychecks.

Obviously Rendon deal has not worked in the Angels favor.

But it’s a little silly to pretend it was insane and reckless to sign him.  He was a proven, premium player in his prime at a position of specific need for the Angels.

The Rendon story is not a story of Angels being stupid, it is really just proof of “shit happens.”

Here’s the thing, though.

Pujols, Hamilton, Upton, Rendon, all waaay overpaid in the long run, a total of $735M!

Sell the team!
