Pete Rose passes away

Rose was a huge part of the Big Red Machine. A true all time great team for most of the seventies. And his stats speak for themselves. HOF by any measure. I even saw him in person that short time with the Expos.

Yes, he broke the gambling rules of his time. And was punished. But that should be rescinded. Especially because of how gambling has become legitimized in sports.

Gambling is a big part of the income every professional sport. All time great icons promote gambling.

Drawing lines about who can and can't gamble about this or that misses the point. All sports now advocate gambling. And they know perfectly well that this promotion is seen by kids who will just think gambling is normalized, and something they'll want to participate in because it's promoted by stars and seen constantly. You can't even watch a pre game or  half time show without gambling odds as part of the content. Every media person shills for their sponsors too.

Pete Rose sliding headfirst to third base in the 1976 World Series, Graig Nettles awaits the throw. : r/mlb

Loved his all-out play, and head-first slides.

Watched the video of his 4,192nd hit. It was a single. He flew around first base just in case. He always did that. And of course there were the legendary slides. Never a slacker on the field. Intense will to win. We have nobody on our team even remotely like that.

It was original meant as an insult, but he turned it into something positive.

So was the term "slugger"..  The purists thought Babe Ruth was ruining the game cause he was hitting HRs and called him a slugger to tear him down.  It's also how the term "pure hitter" came about.  It wss meant to elevate guys like Ty Cobb.

Baseball has always clutched its pearls.

As I recall he got the nickname at least partially because as a rookie he would run down to first base after drawing a walk.

i think it was joe garagiola who said something to the effect of "he runs down to first base like he's afraid they're gonna take it away from him." he used to run on his home runs, too.

The debate will rage once more. Here is my view. Pete Rose IS already in the Hall of Fame by virtue of his records. Pete Rose should NEVER be **honored** by the Hall of Fame because he gambled on baseball.

Nothing would destroy a professional sport like the uncertainty of predetermined outcomes due to gambling. It would turn into professional wrestling. Gambling is THE unforgivable sin within a sport.

I remember Pete for all those hits and that collision at home plate with Ray Fosse in the 1970 All-Star game. RIP Pete, who was truly in love with playing the game of baseball.        Here's his final interview, from this month.

The HOF debate is a whole lot easier to view if you ask yourself this question:

Is a player being inducted into the HOF PRIMARILY an award given to the individual player (to “honor” them personally) or is it PRIMARILY the HOF declaring their decision to acknowledge the player as one of the greatest players of all time?

Obviously the individual player FEELS personally honored and recognized.

But does it make sense to deliberately starve the emotional payoff to the player personally in exchange for having a museum that is now historically inaccurate?

They certainly could have inducted Rose for his greatness as a player and even put accurate language right in his plaque regarding how he shamed himself, and had no honoring ceremony, and “banned” him from all HOF events.

I personally choose historical accuracy over using the inclusion/exclusion as a reward or punishment to a player.

Sadly, Rose is likely to receive a lot of love from a variety of people now that he's gone... It's sad he didn't get to see the outpouring that's happening now.
