Off the top of my head, I can think of two $100+ million deals that have been decent for the team(s) involved: A-Roid's first one, and Cliff Lee's.

CC Sabathia is only 5 years into his 8 year contract with the Yankees, but unless he has a major injury or completely falls apart, his 8 years and $182 M contract worked out well for the Yankees.

Longoria, Pujols's first 100 mil deal, Cabrera, and possibly ManRam were all great 100 mil contracts.

I think one thing about the article was absolutely correct.  Very rarely do players get better when they sign these mega deals.  In most of the cases, they are already at the peak of their game.  What you are paying for is the hope that they continue to produce at the same levels.  

 

In most cases, the player will see some form of decrease in production eventually.  And unfortunately for us, some will see a severe decrease.

The paper version of that article included a table that showed all the contracts and their average annual numbers before and after signing. Surprisingly most of them were reasonably close, although to be fair a lot of the guys are in the beginning of their current deals and will certainly tail off towards the end.

Angels are currently on the hook for three of the four worst contracts of all time:

 

Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, Vernon Wells

 

$445M of Moreno's money for those three.
