Rex Ryan runs with the Bulls in Spain

Recommended Posts

In my ongoing pursuit of being the second Most Interesting Man Alive, I remember running with the bulls in a small northern Spanish village back in the day.  Great experience.  The town shuts down for the week and everyone parties until they pass out, pretty much.  So, you drink until about 7 or 8am, get some sleep for a couple hours and then the bulls are let loose to run/walk on a pre-determined path.

I ran for a bit but quickly saw that I was out of my league.  Most of the bulls just kind of walk until one of the local dudes swaps them enough times with rolled up newspaper.  Then, they start charging.  This is when you have to watch yourself.  A bullhorn grazed me and I took refuge in a doorway after that.  A chick fainted in front of me and these old people dragged her into the doorway, gave her some water and let her hang.

I have pictures somewhere.  It was a good memory.

The tradition is that at the end of the week, on the feast day of the patron saint for that village, the locals pick the fattest, bull and kill it.  The town eating it in celebration.  Remember, this is old school business, so PETA wasn't around when the tradition started.  Let's hope they respect the traditions of the indigenous peoples.

This is a video from my family's ancestral home, Terceira Island in the Azores. The tradition there is bulls on a rope with their horns capped. This video is just a small sampling of people getting hit by bulls, always a great laugh. I have seen this in person but I am smart enough to know not to get too close to these beasts.
