I'd take Bourjos or Trout's robbery over the Machado play. Even the Puig throw to double off dude from the warning track was more impressive to me.

It's a very nice throw, no doubt.  However, if the batter has any speed at all he's safe and we're not talking about it.

The play had a high degree of difficulty.  Most 3B would either commit an error on the throw or would just hold on to the ball.  Top 5 play easy.

That throw was nuts, most throws to first from third like that are off target, hell even throws from short stops across their body like that are often off target.

Had to see the replay to know for sure...but that throw was on the fly...

 

And he's a natural shortstop. I doubt he's used to making throws like that from third.

It was an amazing play but if he doesn't bobble it in the first place it would have been a routine play.

Exactly. Had he not made the throw, which was indeed an incredible throw, the focus would be on how he didn't field it cleanly, probably still a hit, but what makes the throw necessary is that he didn't glove it in the first place.

I don't think the fact that he could have fielded it cleanly takes anything away from how great of a play it was. It was a decently hard hit ball and Machado did what he could with it. If every outfielder was 3x faster there would be hardly any diving catches.

Great play, with amazing arm-strength.  But not play of the year because of the bobble imo.  He has a lot more ESPY's in his future...

 

If a player gets a crappy jump on a fly-ball, then has to lay-out to catch it, it's a good play but they caused it.  Brooks made similar throws from that distance after scooping the ball cleanly.

I never saw brooks robinson play, but how in the world do you make a throw one step away from the warning track in foul ground after fielding the ball cleanly?
