OC Register: Griffin Canning works out of early jam but Angels lose to Padres

Recommended Posts

THE GAME: The Angels lost to the Padres, 3-0, in the final Cactus League game for most of the everyday players on Friday in Tempe, Ariz. The Angels have one final game in Arizona, but many of the players will already be in Southern California preparing for the Freeway Series, which starts on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Griffin Canning gave up two runs (one earned) in four innings. Canning allowed the Padres to load the bases in the first on three straight singles, but he escaped with just one run scoring. Canning has allowed two earned runs in 13-2/3 innings this spring. He is a candidate for the Angels’ No. 6 starter spot, but the Angels still might opt to start him in Triple-A because left-hander Tucker Davidson has also pitched well and is out of options. Canning, who is returning after missing a year and a half with a back injury, said he was satisfied with his spring. “I’m pretty happy with it,” he said. “I think I showed up ready, ready to go and kind of prove that I’m healthy.” … Left-hander José Quijada pitched a scoreless inning a day after allowing six runs. … Right-hander Ben Joyce worked a scoreless inning, striking out two. … Left-hander Aaron Loup gave up a homer to Fernando Tatis Jr. in 1-1/3 innings. It was Loup’s first outing since returning from Team USA.

HITTING REPORT: Among the starters, Taylor Ward, Luis Rengifo and Hunter Renfroe were the only players to have hits, with a single apiece. … Anthony Rendon left the game after just one at-bat, but he was not injured, Nevin said. Rendon is expected to play all three Freeway Series games.

DEFENSE REPORT: Ward was charged with an error after he misplayed a ball in left field, leading to the second run against Canning.

UP NEXT: Angels vs. Cubs, Saturday, noon PT, Tempe Diablo Stadium, Bally Sports West, 830 AM
