Does anyone else love the way they do these photo shoots every year or is it just me. Take out a wrinkled bed sheet with Angels logos on it that you use once per year. Give the kid a hat, make him wear a one size fits all jersey that he takes off right afterward and gives to the next kid. Put a pen in his hand and pretend he's signing his actual contract when the actual contract he signs was done sometimes weeks ago already.

I think it's cool.  This could be the biggest moment of these kids lives.  Get them some screen time on social media so dorks like us can comment.

So do I. It's sort of like this ... I've attended like at least a dozen proms in my life now. They all sort of run together and are generally the same thing. But it's cool nonetheless.

I have long wondered why there isn’t any baseball talent that comes from Mexico. They play baseball in Mexico, they have a large population to draw from (a big potential talent pool), and Mexico seemingly has more financial resources than many other Latin countries (which should result in development of talent). Why doesn’t Mexico produce more baseball players?

They play baseball, but not like they do in Cuba, Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic, and certainly not like they do in Japan or Korea.

It's sort of like dating they play baseball in Nevada. Well yes, they definitely do, but not like they do in California, Texas, Florida or Georgia.

In that vein, In the soccer community, a frequently asked question is "Why doesn't the US, with its huge population and many fine athletes, produce many world-class soccer players?"

Because football, basketball, baseball, hockey, tennis, golf, lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee ...

MLB pipeline releasing its top prospects by position.  Angels have 2 in the top 10 - O'Hoppe at #5, Quero at #10.

Quote

Highest floor: O’Hoppe
While none of his individual tools jump off the page, O’Hoppe does everything well and his work ethic points to a future where he plays above his tools as a big league regular backstop for a long time.

The Top 10 (ETA)

1. Francisco Álvarez, Mets (2023) - Will play catcher for a couple years before moving to the corner outfield.

2. Diego Cartaya, Dodgers (2024) - Good major league catcher for a long time. Salvador Perez type of career.

3. Kevin Parada, Mets (2025) - Becomes a solid regular at catcher.

4. Harry Ford, Mariners (2025) - He'll move to the outfield when the Mariners see his bat progress too fast for his glove to keep up.

5. Logan O'Hoppe, Angels (2023) - He'll be an above average starting catcher for close to a decade.

6. Endy Rodriguez, Pirates (2023) - He'll start his career as a catcher, but his bat will be too valuable for the toll catching takes on his body so he'll move to 2B.

7. Henry Davis, Pirates (2024) - He'll stock at catcher, but will be your prototypical bat first catcher. Great for fantasy baseball. Merely decent in real life.

8. Bo Naylor, Guardians (2023) - Not enough glove and bat to consistently start, but great OBP and good enough power and athleticism to keep on the bench. Fringy career.

9. Drew Romo, Rockies (2024) - Austin Hedges/Martin Maldonado type of career. Glove first starter, born leader.

10. Edgar Quero, Angels (2025) - Decent all around catcher. No standout tool. Average starting catcher in MLB.

In the Top 100 chat, Silseth was named as somebody who just missed the cut

Yeah I saw that. But given the other pitchers in the top 100 (at MLB's top 100), that's still underestimating him by a fair amount. I feel confident that at worst, he'll be a back end starter. I'll take that any time.

Taken from O’Hoppe’s interview and article back in late September…

On the topic of rankings, as of today on Sept 20th, 2022 take a look at MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects. Logan O’Hoppe has the highest OPS (.960) & wRC+ (159) of all the MLB top 100 prospect catchers based on 80 games or more played at the catching position in the 2022 season.

Rank 1st - Francisco Alvarez: (20 years old) .250/.360/.504 (.863 OPS) 26 HR, 75 RBI, 62 walks, 105 games, 75 at catcher.

Rank 7th - Gabriel Moreno: (22 years old) .315/.386/.420 (.806 OPS) 3 HR, 39  RBI, 24 walks, 62 games

Rank 9th - Diego Cartaya: (21 years old) .254/.389/.503 (.892 OPS) 22 HR, 72 RBI, 63 walks, 95 games, 64 behind the plate.

Rank 20th - Henry Davis: (22 years old) .265/.380/.472 (.852 OPS) 10 HR, 42 RBI, 21 walks, 59 games, 38 games behind the plate.

Rank 36th - Shea Langeliers (24 years old) .283/.366/.510 (.876 OPS) 19 HR, 56 RBI, 43 walks, 92 games, 79 behind the plate.

Rank 40th - Kevin Parada (21 years old) .275/.455/.425 (.880 OPS) 1 HR, 8 RBI, 12 walks, 13 games

Rank 50th - Tyler Soderstrom (20 years old) .265/ .324/.509 (.833 OPS), 28 HR, 99 RBI, 125 games, 47 games at C, 56 games at 1B.

Rank 66th - Drew Romo (21 years old) .254/.321/.372 (.693 OPS), 5 HR, 58 RBI, 35 walks, 101 games, 57 behind the plate.

Rank 67th - Logan O’Hoppe: (22 years old) .283/.416/.544 (.960 OPS) 159 wRC+, 26 HR, 78 RBI, 70 walks, 104 games *Second most games played at catcher with 85 from the top catching prospects.

Rank 68th - Harry Ford (19 years old) .274/.425/.438 (.863 OPS) 11 HR, 65 RBI, 88 walks, 104 games, 54 behind the plate.

Rank 78th - Bo Naylor (22 years old) .256/.388/.482 (.870 OPS), 19 HR, 61 RBI, 79 walks, 114 games, 95 games behind the plate

Rank 86th - Austin Wells (23 years old) .277/.385/.512 (.897 OPS) 20 HR, 65 RBI, 56 walks, 92 games, 65 behind the plate.

*Unranked - Edgar Quero (19 years old) .312/.435/.530 (.965 OPS) 17 HR, 75 RBI, 73 walks, 111 games, 80 games behind the plate

*Unranked - Endy Rodriguez (22 years old) .317/.406/.580 (.986 OPS) 24 HR, 87 RBI, 60 walks, 119 games, 72 games behind the plate, 17 at 2B, 13 in LF and 3 games at 1B.

An impressive list of talented catchers on MLB's top 100 prospects list. You could argue that O'Hoppe should be ranked somewhere between Cartaya & Davis and definitely ahead of Gabriel Moreno in their current rankings. It's also worth noting that Angels prospect catcher Edgar Quero who is not currently ranked as a top 100 prospect by MLB boasts the highest OPS (.965) based on the same games played at catcher criteria. Endy Rodriguez is most likely moving to another position.

It's pretty neat to see the Angels have 2 catchers listed within the top 10 catching prospects of baseball.  When was the last time we saw that?

They weren't doing these at the time, but that likely would've been the case in consecutive years in 2004 and 2005 with Jeff Mathis and Mike Napoli.

In 2004, Jeff Mathis was the 22nd ranked prospect by BA. Mike Napoli was coming off a season where he hit 29 bombs with a .393 OBP.

In 2005, Jeff Mathis was the 67th ranked prospect, hit 21 HR's in AAA with a .343 OBP and made a late season appearance with the Angels. Mike Napoli hit 31 HR with a .372 OBP in AA.

Despite varying outcomes, Jeff Mathis and Mike Napoli remain the best catching prospect tandem the Angels have ever had. But I still believe O'Hoppe will be the best Angels catcher maybe ever. He has Napoli's strengths in power and OBP, and Mathis' in defense and leadership.

Where Napoli would become a bat first starting catcher that would move to 1B/DH, Mathis carved a long career as a defensive specialist and backup. I believe O'Hoppe will be a good starting catcher for the larger part of a decade. I think he'll settle in as a .250/.350 20 HR on an annual basis and be in the conversation for gold gloves.

Just a reminder of how impressive Quero was last year:

of qualified players in all of A ball last year,

He was 2nd in BA
1st in Doubles
2nd highest OBP
1st in OPS
1st in slg
15th lowest K rate
23rd highest bb rate
2nd highest wRC+

And he was the 8th youngest position player of 109 qualified.

they might not be able to keep holding that bat back for too long in hopes that the D catches up.

What position would Quero best project to, if not catching?

He's a bit on the shorter side, but he's pretty mobile, particularly for a catcher. And despite being a catcher, he doesn't necessarily have a howitzer. It certainly good enough but most reports indicate it's more adequate than anything.

Because of his size, I don't think he's a fit at 1B. 3B is a difficult spot to learn, so unless that transition occurs immediately, I doubt that's a fit either. I think LF it's probably the best bet.

Having said that, he's so young, and because of O'Hoppe, there's no reason to rush him unless he forces the issue. His likeliest outcome is catcher, by far. That's where he carries value and he's not bad at all. He's young, and raw but he should be plenty good enough to remain behind the plate.
