Jeff Mathis: a -2 OPS+ this season

Recommended Posts

Whoever is 435th must really suck. I'm guessing its napoli since we traded him.

Bill James has Napoli as #77 on his list of the 500 best catchers all-time.

Number 500 is a very interesting guy by the name of Clyde Sukeforth. He played ten seasons in the majors, finishing with 2 home runs and a career WAR of 0.5, thoroughly forgettable numbers, but what he did after his playing days was remarkable. As a scout, he was instrumental in the discovery of Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente, and as a bullpen coach with the Dodgers in 1951, he recommended to his manager that Ralph Branca enter that playoff game in the 9th inning to face Bobby Thomson.

Sukeforth had a long career as a scout and a major league coach, and died at the age of 98.

If mathis continues his current pace for the year and gets about 40 abs getting roughly six hits, he will surpass Mike Ryan as the worst hitter in the last 100 years with as many abs as he has.  Only Bill Bergen will be worse in the entire history of baseball and he played around 1900.

Jeffy should be happy he doesn't play in the Dead Ball Era.

Jeff Mathis is a winner. Stats cannot measure his intangibles.
